2024 fashion trends

We saw the rise and fall of a lot of fashion trends this year. Some that had returned from the ’90s and some from the early 2000s. In the year 2023, we saw a lot of ‘cool-girl’ relaxed fit trends with cargo pants as well as skirts, floor-length denim skirts, lots of silver accents and an abundance of the colour fuchsia.

Now that the year is coming to a close it begs the question: what trends do we think are in store for us for the year 2024? How often are we going to see them and what’s their lifeline? But most importantly are you willing to transform your wardrobe in order to keep up with the trends? Let’s dive into the sartorial trendy frenzy we call fashion for the next year.

Bubble Hems

We’ve seen the revival of the micro-mini skirt from the Y2K-style zeitgeist, now it’s the seemingly the bubble hem skirt’s turn. This reimagined silhouette has taken the form of bulbous tops as well as floor-grazing skirts and even trousers. Designers like Loewe, Louis Vuitton and not to forget Jacquemus have popularized this poofy shape back on the runway and this trend has slowly since then taken over street style as well. It’s no surprise since shows like The Crown have been watched by millions, people have taken a keen interest in the late Princess Diana’s wardrobe – which featured a lot of drop waist and bubble hem silhouettes. Could this be the new ‘cool girl’ trend, coquette perhaps? We’ll let you have your creative fun with this.

Double Denim

The double denim trend is the modern-day rendition of the Canadian tuxedo. The look was seen on the runways across Bottega Veneta, Tom Ford, Miu Miu and Fendi, meaning, high fashion has embraced this trend with open arms.

Britney Spears in the year 2001, took this trend a step further by wearing a denim floor-length dress to the AMA’s paired with a bag of a similar motif – looking back at it she recalls the outfit as rather “tacky”. In more recent times, singer Taylor Swift donned a double denim look for the VMAs after-party. She wore a denim co-ord set from EB Denim, which featured a denim corset top along with a denim pleated skirt with frayed ends. Despite varying opinions on combining the same materials, this trend is likely to continue in the coming year.

Leather Coats

It’s no surprise that leather outerwear is currently trending and will continue trending in the year 2024 as well. There is something about pairing a leather coat or blazer with a casual outfit that seems to elevate it and give it a tailored look. The leather outerwear trend is one such trend that has time and time again graced us with its presence on the runway. Brands like Balenciaga, Chanel and Valentino have all featured this look in their recent collections. Even celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian sport the leather look on occasion. It is safe to say this trend is timeless and here to stay.

Fur Accents

A craze we saw most of this year was the fur-accented accessories. Whether it be the coat, hat or boots – we saw the girls channelling their inner fashion diva with these accessories. Although this trend may be limited to the winter season only, it does not mean this trend hasn’t made a fashion statement. Fashionable yet warm is the motto. Brands like Chanel, Fendi and Moschino have featured this on recent runway shows. Even if it is more likely that this trend will be retired by the summertime, can we find ways to incorporate the fur accents into summer wear as well? Only time will tell.

Coloured tights

Even though we have bid adieu to fuchsia quickly after the Barbie-core trend simmered down, we are not saying bye to the coloured tights trend just yet. The rise of the coloured tights is almost nostalgic, we’re thinking ’60s Twiggy glam.

This trend like many others has had its 20-year revival period and it is back for the year 2024. We have seen the coloured tights trend in the ’60s, the ’80s, and 2010s – during the Gossip Girl era when Blair Waldorf was caught mismatching her tights to her outfits. Seems like we couldn’t stay away from the coloured tights for too long as it’s back this year and is something we will be seeing a lot more of in the next. The best part about this trend is you’ll never feel dressed down, this could be the ultimate accessory to (almost) every outfit. Regardless of whether you pair it with similar tones for a monochromatic look or with different colours for a standout look, your outfit is guaranteed to garner some attention.

Pants-less

Now we know a lot of you might find this trend impractical and something only celebrities may pull off, but this is one of the trends that was seen most on the runway this year. Our fave Y2K celebrity, Paris Hilton once said, “Skirts are supposed to be the size of a belt. Life’s short, take risks.” Iconic if you ask us. But what’s her take on going pants-less? Seems like the Kardashian clan is on board with this trend. This trend was seen in the early ’90s through Chanel, this heightened hemline has taken over the runway more recently by being showcased in shows like Miu Miu, Loewe, Jacquemus and countless other brands that have seemed to hop on this trend train. The question remains, are you willing to hop on this trend too or will we see it demise by the end of 2024?
