If the neon Valentino Haute Couture gown at the Golden Globes was any indication, we expected Cynthia Erivo’s red carpet style to stun all season long. The singer and actress stepped out onto the 2021 BAFTAs red carpet overnight in a shimmering Louis Vuitton dress in an ode to “playfulness”.
Speaking with British Vogue for the occasion, Erivo described the look as “fun” and noted the “painstaking detail” in the intricate garment. The long-sleeved mini dress was pulled from Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2021 collection and styled by Jason Bolden, (the man also behind the stylish facades of Yara Shahidi and Amanda Gorman).
“What I love about this look is its playfulness,” the actress told the publication. “I love the painstaking detail that this dress is made with. It’s so fun.”
In addition to being an award-winning actress and singer, Erivo has recently become a style icon, wearing a number of standout red carpet looks in recent months. On March 19, she appeared on stage for the Recording Academy wearing a Maison Valentino gown completely crafted with pearls.
In the same interview, the 34-year-old reflected on how fashion has served us amid the pandemic.
“It allows you to express a part of you that is, maybe more often than not, hidden away,” she muses. “For me, it’s really just an extension of who I am. The stories we can tell with the clothes we wear… the statements we can make!”
Erivo is currently filming Disney’s live-action retelling of Pinocchio in London. She has also appeared in National Geographic’s anthology series on Aretha Franklin, Genius: Aretha. Speaking on the role, she recently told Dujor, “I really wanted to find out what she was doing in one song to another,” the Harriet star said. “I wanted to pay homage to the way she would think and the choices she would make, because they were really specific.”
“It was very strange to be playing Franklin, who’s such a huge influence on music itself, and be recording an album at the same time.”
The question remains: what will Erivo wear next?
