Blanchett has always been ready to take a risk when it comes to fashion – even when it means catching a bus because a car would cause wrinkles – and her look of choice for tonight’s Critics Choice Awards is a reminder of that maverick streak.
Who else but Blanchett could arrive in a monochrome taupe skirt-and-shirt combo and make it look like the height of couture?
While her peers seemed determined to dazzle, the multi-award winning Cate Blanchett has opted for understatement, right down to the minimal amount of jewellery bar a statement ear cuff courtesy of Louis Vuitton and wearing her hair in simple, gentle waves.
The Max Mara-designed outfit, with its structured collar, functional breast pockets and rolled sleeves tucked into a floor length skirt with subtle fringing, expressed a sense of austere, utilitarian glamour.
This isn’t the first time that a shirt-skirt combo has made its way down a red carpet. Sharon Stone famously wore a Gap business shirt to the 1996 Oscars. Uma Thurman and Zendaya both were renditions of this – in Bottega Veneta and Valentino Haute Couture respectively – to the 2022 Oscars.
Perhaps it’s a lingering aesthetic left over from her stellar showing in Todd Field’s Tár, which Blanchett has been nominated in the Best Actress category, competing against public favourite Michelle Yeoh nominated for role in the equally acclaimed Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Her performance as the complex virtuoso Lydia Tár has already nabbed her the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. Blanchett was notably absent from last week’s Golden Globes awards due to a scheduling conflict – a symptom that seemed to be going around as fellow winners Amanda Seyfried and Kevin Costner all chose to stay away.
