Bangs are a trend that absolutely had a moment during the pandemic. Whether they were self-cut, grown out or an out-of-lockdown impulse decision, it’s a hairstyle that’s always relevant. But the specifics change year on year, and 2022 is set to be the year of bottleneck bangs.

The shape — one that’s gaining traction on TikTok — is inspired by the shape of a bottle, where they’re slimmer towards the roots, and fan out towards the brows and ears. Like curtain bangs or wolf cut bangs, the bottleneck style is soft, choppy and characterised by length, making them easier to maintain than a classic blunt cut.

Seen on celebrities like Margot Robbie and Dakota Johnston, the style has a slight ’70s feel and works best for normal to wavy hair types. If you’re looking to try it, ask your stylist for long bangs that reach the top of your cheekbones, with soft, fluffy layers that kick out around the brows. As for styling, be sure to part the hair when it’s damp (preferably in the centre) and rough dry with fingers and a blow dryer. If you need to add shape, take a small amount of wax or pomade and twist the ends. Finish with a spray of something that will add grip and texture.
