When Billie Eilish was first spotted with The Neighbourhood frontman Jesse Rutherford, who also happens to be the ex-boyfriend of fashion It girl Devon Lee Carlson, the internet went into meltdown mode over the potential couple’s 11-year age gap: Eilish is 20 years old and Rutherford is 31.

Soon after a few Deux Moi sightings and one viral TikTok showing them holding hands at Universal Studios, Eilish and Rutherford took the narrative into their own hands, confirming that yes, they’re very much a couple and no, they DGAF what you think about it when they packed on the PDA on the red carpet in matching Gucci looks.

Since then, Eilish’s Instagram comments have been full of unsolicited advice and trolling from ‘fans’. But if she’s seen it — or cares about it — she’s clearly unphased. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the singer opened up about her new relationship for the first time, saying she’s “really happy” and can’t believe she managed to catch the eye of someone she’s been crushing on for years.

“I just am really inspired by this person, and, you know, he’s inspired by me,” Eilish told the publication of Rutherford. “It’s really cool, and I’m really excited and I’m really happy about it.”

On the point of the public’s perception — namely that of power dynamics and whether Eilish is being taken advantage of — she responded. “Say what you need to say, but, like, I am in control right now. I did this.”

She continued, “I managed to get my way to a point in my life where I not only was known by a person that I thought was the hottest f**king f**ker alive, but pulled his ass! Are you kidding me? Can we just [get a] round of applause for me? I pulled his ass! All me! I did that s**t! I locked that motherf**ker down!”
