This Barbie is at the world premiere for her film! Which Barbie, do you ask? Literally everyone. Yes, every living (and plastic) doll in Hollywood descended from their Malibu dream houses and headed downtown to walk the magenta carpet at the world premiere of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
After a whirlwind press tour that’s taken the cast of the highly-anticipated live-action film from Sydney to Seoul and Mexico City before finally heading back to Los Angeles, the star-studded ensemble has gathered for one final high-octane (and silicone-free) display of everything #Barbiecore.
For Margot Robbie, whose summer was spent cosplaying as her iconic character in a melange of real-life Barbie outfits from the 80s and 90s, her latest sartorial recreation was her pièce de résistance.
As Robbie’s stylist Andrew Mukumal pointed out, Robbie wore a life-sized replica of the ‘Solo In The Spotlight’ Barbie from 1960. Robbie as Barbie’s gown was an exact grown-up remake, with the strapless sequinned column dress copied by Daniel Roseberry at Schiaparelli the perfect conclusion to this year’s Barbiemania.
The 33-year-old even held the soft tule handkerchief and wore the same black mules her Barbie wore, making this grand finale her solo in the spotlight, indeed.
Elsewhere across the pink carpet, Ryan Gosling proved why he is the consummate embodiment of “Kenergy” in a pastel Gucci suit.
Keeping with the blush pink theme was co-star America Ferrera who referenced the Prada balconette bra and mini skirt Robbie wore to promote Barbie at the 2023 CinemaCon with her own satin interpretation from Saint John.
But not all Barbies adhered to the unofficial pretty in pink dress code—which in itself is the ultimate Barbie move because she’s nothing if not a fashion pioneer.
Dua Lipa opted for a custom crystal mesh slip dress and rocket mules by Bottega Veneta, (this Barbie is a Bottega girlie), while the Haim sisters—Este, Danielle and Alana—wore a trio of second-skin metallic midi dresses from Louis Vuitton, (this Barbie is in a rock band).
Billie Eilish put a Y2K pop punk spin on Barbie’s uniform in an oversized pink button-up, baggy shorts and matching pink tie.
This premiere was a melting pot of references and aesthetics, proving that despite Barbie’s naysayers, she literally can and does do it all. As they told us on the film’s promotional poster: She’s everything.
