With 2021 being a year of re-building and re-furbishing from the chaos of last year, there are seismic shifts in the way people take care of themselves. The alienation of 2020, coupled up with the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we re-evaluated the self-care. Whether it be through extensive digital detoxes or intuitive eating being on the rise, the definition of wellness has changed for everyone. So here are a couple of wellness trends that are going to dominate 2021…

Digital detoxes

Digital wellness is growing to be an important trend in 2021 and the key to living a balanced life. Overexposure to technology or our screens, in general, has been linked to issues with sleep, stress, anxiety, burnout and breaking of focus.  So, how do you do this then, without having to completely quit the internet cold turkey? Come up with a plan and stick to it. Without having to deliberately cut down your screen time so much so that you feel like you’re forcing yourself to, make sure you assess the role of technology in your life and the extent to which it serves you. This could be recognizing parts of technology that make you unhappy like comparing yourself to other people on Instagram. Set modest goals such as reducing your screen time from 3 hours a day to 2 and a half and so on and so forth. Repetition is the key to creating healthy habits.

INTUITIVE EATING

Mindful and intuitive eating has been around for years but it was really understood only just last year. The destigmatizing of carbohydrates as a macronutrient has been the most major development during late 2020. So, how intuitive eating works is building a good relationship with food. The mentality of some foods as being “good” and others as being “bad” is far from true for everybody is different and what is key to achieving satiation, which is more popularly known as a hunger-fullness mentality. Thus, aligning what you eat with the aim of satiation is the premise of intuitive eating.

SKINAMALISM

While it’s not out-of-trend to have a ten-step beauty routine, skinamalism seems to be at the top of the list self-care-wise. But if you’ve been looking to ditch an elaborate routine, try streamlining your routine to just a few steps, for the sake of simplicity (and sanity). A three-step system, for example, cleansing, toning and moisturizing can be your new go-to!

Light-based wellness

This, instead of keeping track of how many hours your asleep, tracks how many hours you’re awake. More specifically, this technique is perfect to adjust and optimize your circadian rhythm or internal body clock. The best way to incorporate this technique is to open up the blinds, let some natural light in and reduce blue-light exposure after-hours to get better-quality sleep!
