Last week, the upcoming Met Gala was awash with rumours on who would make the all-important guest list. Outrage (namely from agents and managers) ensued after it was believed a slew of TikTok influencers would be in attendance. Naturally, we all nervously laughed it off. But in a new report from Variety, Addison Rae has been speaking with the Met’s authority, Anna Wintour.
Speaking on the red carpet of her debut Netflix film, He’s All That, Rae told NeueHouse that the Vogue editor has emailed her.
“I got an email from her and I was freaking out,” the 20-year-old told the publication. “She was just saying thank you for something I sent over. It was wild. I was shaking. We emailed a little bit. It was exciting.”
Could that mean Rae will make an appearance on September 13? She has remained tight lipped but noted, “There are a lot of exciting things coming up.” This isn’t Rae’s first run in with editor. In April she participated in a video series for the publication.
The co-chairs will be a lot younger than years gone by and features Timothée Chalamet, Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish and Naomi Osaka. The annual gala is trying to shift its focus to a younger audience.
“There is something unifying in us being young and fresh-faced but, at the same time, we have become somewhat emblematic of our industries,” Gorman said at the announcement of her involvement. “We are the new generation — and you’d better watch out.”
So really, it isn’t so far-fetched that the guest list could feature a new era of influencers.
But according to one publicist, “Personally, I don’t think the Met is cool anymore … It’s gone from super prestigious to [being] full of influencers.”
The highly-anticipated event will be held on September 13 with scheduling slated to return to normal in May 2022.
