The 2023 awards season is in full swing with the recent Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards giving us a hint at what we could expect – and who we could expect to be nominated –  at this year’s upcoming Academy Awards.

The most prestigious event on the calendar for everyone working in the industry is set to take place March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and ahead of the night, the Academy has just announced its 2023 nominations.

Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the charge with 11 nominations – as it should! – with All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin following close behind.

Austin Butler, who has been cleaning up so far for his role as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, is nominated for his first Oscar for Best Actor, and so too is Normal People’s Paul Mescal for his indie film, Aftersun. Ana de Armas and Angela Bassett received nods for their work in Blonde and The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, respectively and both Lady Gaga and Rihanna are included in the Best Song category. Gaga for “Hold My Hand” and Rihanna for her first song in six years, “Lift Me Up.”

Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, no women were nominated again in the Best Director category, something the Oscars has been criticised for since its inception over 95 years ago. Despite Sarah Polley’s Women Talking being nominated for Best Picture, she was left out of the list, and so too was Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the epic The Woman King, which grossed $70 at the box office. To date, only seven women have ever been recognised for directing and just three have won, all in recent years: Kathryn Bigelow in 2010, Chloe Zhao in 2021 and Jane Campion last year.

Below, check out this year’s full list of nominations.
