The region’s creative landscape has been at the forefront of cultural conversation, and Palestinian-Chilean artist Elyanna has long been championed for representing the Arab world on a global scale.
The singer’s signature move is blending her roots with each song – seamlessly weaving an architecture of rhythms that bridges the gap between the Middle East and the Western pop industry. Now, just one month after her iconic collab Haneish with Egyptian singer TUL8TE, the 24-year-old returns with a new story to tell through her latest single, BOSA.
The Nazareth-born artist followed a seamless architecture of rhythmic layering, with reggae-infused beats softened by the flow of traditional Arabic instrumentals. The result is a sound that reflects the increasingly global nature of Arab music, where different cultural influences can co-exist without compromising their origins. For the music video, the artist paid homage to her origins, dressed in traditional Palestinian and Arab motifs – gold jewellery, the wuqaya and henna. The singer continues to do what she does best – effortlessly reshaping the cultural conversation with her unique musical persona.
The song’s musical essence resembles the mid 2000s dance-pop era, while still maintaining Elyanna’s renowned musical persona. Originating at home, alongside her brother and mother, the song was brought to life by Moroccan producer RedOne, alongside eight contributors, including Moustafa Hadouta, Massari and Lebanese hitmaker Jad Choueiri, who previously contributed to Elyanna’s most hit single Ganeni. But what makes the single stand out is not just the infectious beats, but the story written into its lyricism.
The Arab music scene has long been filled with love songs centred around narratives of men pursuing women, with women often cast into one of two familiar roles: ‘the damsel’ or ‘the rebel’. Now, Elyanna pulls an iconic gender role reversal. In the song, the artist takes on a flirtatious role, with the lyrics portraying her asking for a kiss rather than waiting for one.
The lyrics lean into the familiar vernacular of Arab flirtation, adding another layer of cultural familiarity to the track while keeping its playful energy firmly intact. A confident, upfront portrayal of romance, placing Elyanna firmly in control of the relationship dynamic. A narrative that remains relatively unheard of within the region’s musical landscape, further cementing the singer’s revolutionary ability to reshape cultural narratives.
