Laura Mercier’s beauty philosophy was born behind the scenes. Trained at the prestigious Carita beauty school in Paris, and with a background in painting, the French makeup artist later built her career across shoots in Paris and New York, where she became known for creating fresh, luminous skin so polished it required less retouching for photographers. That instinct for real, perfected complexion would go on to define the brand she launched in 1996 – and help make products like Tinted Moisturizer and Translucent Loose Setting Powder lasting icons.
In this interview with GRAZIA Middle East, Mercier reflects on the story behind her brand, the products she created to fill real gaps in the market, and why makeup that enhances rather than hides still feels as relevant as ever.

You’ve built one of the most enduring beauty brands in the world, yet you’ve always kept a relatively low profile. Was that intentional?
My passion has always been artistry, not as much around being in the spotlight myself. The brand grew from my work on set, where I needed products that simply did not exist, so creating them became essential. I’ve always believed that when products truly perform, they speak more powerfully than the person behind them.
So much of modern beauty now moves at speed – trends, launches, viral moments. What has helped Laura Mercier remain timeless rather than trend-led?
For me, beauty has never been about trends or making someone look weird just to be different. It is about bringing out what is unique in every face. Always authentic, never overly done. Formulas like Tinted Moisturizer and Translucent Loose Setting Powder endure because they are rooted in this philosophy. An emphasis on technique and quality, products that feel real. We continue to innovate with intention, ensuring the performance behind our products evolves without losing their purpose.
Your idea of the “Flawless Face” changed the way so many women approach makeup. What did you feel the industry was getting wrong when you first introduced that philosophy?
Makeup was often about transformation rather than refinement. I wanted skin to look alive – balanced, luminous, and believable – which inspired products like Tinted Moisturizer and Secret Camouflage. Every detail is intentional, makeup looks refined, feels weightless, and never appears overdone. The intention was always to reveal beauty, not conceal identity.
You trained in fine arts before moving into beauty. Do you still see makeup first and foremost as an artistic medium?
Absolutely. Makeup is painting with light and texture, only the canvas moves and breathes. My fine arts background continues to influence every detail, from complexion finishes to the invisible perfection of Translucent Loose Setting Powder. It’s about creating harmony, balance, and dimension without ever masking what makes a face unique.
Products like the Tinted Moisturizer, Secret Camouflage Concealer, and Translucent Loose Setting Powder have become true icons. Did you know at the time that they were filling such a specific gap in the market?
I wasn’t thinking about icons, I was solving problems I encountered every day as an artist. I needed products that enhanced skin without heaviness or artifice. I took the formulas I was hand mixing and made them available and accessible. Their longevity comes from authenticity; they were created from real necessity.
Of all the products you’ve created, which one best captures your philosophy of beauty – and why?
It’s almost impossible to choose, but if I must, I would say Tinted Moisturizer. It perfects the complexion while caring for the skin, allowing individuality to remain visible. Its impact lasts beyond application, improving tone and texture over time, revealing touchable, healthy-looking skin. To me, beauty should feel effortless, healthy, and entirely your own.
You’ve spoken before about enhancing natural beauty rather than masking it. In a world of filters, heavy glam, and perfection culture, does that message feel even more relevant now?
Yes, perhaps more than ever. Women are rediscovering that real skin – softly refined with products like Real Flawless Foundation or Translucent Loose Setting Powder – feels modern and luxurious. Authenticity has a timeless elegance. Our approach is designed with this in mind. Adapting to her features, style, and her life – so elevated results feel effortless and uniquely hers.
What’s one makeup habit you wish more women would let go of?
Using too much foundation. My goal was always for women to be complimented on their skin, never their makeup. Thoughtful textures, seamless blendability, and skin-first finishes allow products to disappear into the skin – enhancing what’s already there while preserving individuality. Strategic correction with Secret Camouflage often creates a more beautiful and natural result. Light application of Tinted Moisturizer corrects tone, leaving skin naturally plump, hydrated, and healthy-looking. It is all about intentional choices that perfect and refine.

And what’s one simple approach to beauty you think never fails, no matter your age or aesthetic?
Begin with complexion. When skin feels balanced and luminous – with Tinted Moisturizer and a touch of Translucent Loose Setting Powder – everything else becomes intuitive. Tone and texture are improved, imperfections blurred, and shine and oil controlled, all while still feeling authentic and real. Beautiful skin transcends trends and generations.
The Middle East has one of the most sophisticated and expressive beauty cultures in the world. What has always stood out to you about women in this region and their relationship with makeup?
There is a remarkable appreciation for precision and artistry. Makeup is embraced as both self-expression and refinement, which I find incredibly inspiring. The confidence and intention behind beauty here is truly distinctive.
Beauty in this region often embraces glamour, but also precision and polish. How do you see the Laura Mercier philosophy fitting into the way women in the Middle East wear beauty today?
I have always believed beauty should be personalised – a tailored recipe unique to each woman. It begins with the inner confidence and radiance that comes from naturally perfected skin. Our complexion products create a refined, seamless foundation, allowing skin to look like itself, only better. Once that foundation is in place, expression comes through colour. A bold lip, a subtle or dramatic eye, choosing colours and textures that complement natural features. This philosophy embraces glamour while always preserving individuality.

Is there a particular Laura Mercier product or category you feel is especially well-suited to women in this region?
Complexion products resonate beautifully because they combine longevity with luminosity. Translucent Loose Setting Powder helps maintain refinement in warmer climates, while Secret Camouflage offers precise correction without weight. The result is polished yet natural skin that lasts. Performance you can both see and feel.
You’ve spent decades helping women look like the best version of themselves. What have you learned about confidence through beauty?
Confidence comes from self-recognition – when a woman sees herself, only more radiant. Makeup should enhance presence, not create disguise. When skin feels effortless, confidence follows naturally.
After all these years, what still excites you about makeup?
The emotional transformation remains endlessly fascinating. A subtle change in complexion or balance can completely shift how someone carries herself. That connection between artistry and confidence still inspires me every day. Our intuitive and achievable approach to artistry instills this confidence.
When do you personally feel most beautiful now?
When beauty feels effortless and authentic. A fresh complexion, a touch of concealer, and softly set skin with Translucent Loose Setting Powder is often enough. Ease creates elegance.
And finally: when people say “Laura Mercier,” what do you hope they think of first – the products, the aesthetic, or the philosophy behind them?
I hope they think of confidence and feel empowered by my effortless approach to artistry. The products exist to serve a philosophy – enhancing individual beauty through flawless skin. If women feel like the best version of themselves, and equipped with the tools to do so, then I have succeeded.
