CHANEL’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection, which debuted earlier this year in Paris, was complete with a campaign that took inspiration from the 1966 film  A Man and a Woman.

As anyone who has seen the film will know, the story almost takes a backseat to its mesmerising cinematography. Shot by Claude Lelouch, its final credits are run alongside poignant footage of the Deauville Planches boardwalk and the expansive seaside. At once moody, haunting and serene, it perfectly captures the peace and awe of an ocean breeze in winter. In one scene, the leading man and woman sit together at a hotel restaurant in Deauville, accompanied by the emphatic presence of a CHANEL handbag perched between the coy lovers.

Deauville, a coastal town in France’s Normandy region, is where Gabrielle Chanel decided to open her second boutique in 1913, where she introduced luxurious casual clothing suitable for leisure and sport—arguably paving the way for her Cruise collections in 1919. It has since held a special place in the history of Chanel, and now, it stars as the backdrop of the Fall/Winter 2024 ready-to-wear show teaser and following campaign.

Directed by Inez & Vinoodh, the clip features longtime house ambassador Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt as they reimage the iconic scenes from Lelouch’s film. As they relish in the potency of their company, the duo slowly give in to their arresting chemistry, leaving just enough room for a classic CHANEL quilted flap shoulder bag between them.

“Do you have any rooms available?,” Cruz asks the waitress, played by model Rianne Van Rompaey.

Playing on the same subtleties of A Man and a Woman, the result is a wistful teaser for the collection, which boasted influences from Lelouch’s captivating work. Chanel’s founder was a longtime film enthusiast, and the house’s creative director, Virginie Viard, has continued this connection throughout the decades.
