There’s been some extremely excited people in our office in the past 24 hours in the wake of Jessica Biel hinting at the possibility of a second season of her thriller The Sinner. Two Golden Globe nominations will do that. (Best Television Performance by an Actress in a  Limited Series Or TV Movie and Best Limited Series or TV Movie.)

The unnerving mystery which navigates why a young mother stabbed a man to death on a beach in broad daylight was originally only meant to be a one-off mini-series. But has Biel – who is also the executive producer on the show in addition to starring in it – had a change of heart? “We are really hoping to hear soon if we get to come back or not,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “Initially, the show was genuinely conceived as a limited series so it was a surprise to us as well that, with the amazing viewership and the incredible journey that this show has taken, it was even a possibility to come back.”

Biel also said she was “diving deeply: with the show’s producers to work out what exactly a second season would entail. “We’re hoping to set it up and see if we can come up with some amazing and interesting stories. If we get to come back, we’re starting fresh again.”

“I will definitely be involved in some way,” she continued. “I hope somebody writes me into the show, if we can figure it out. We will figure it out if it’s possible, but we want to be authentic to the show. We want to do what’s right for the show as opposed to what’s right for me.” Could season two see Biel reprise her role as Cora? Could it be a further exploration of Detective Ambrose?

The Sinner is streaming now on Netflix.
