As the 2024 award season has proven, Hollywood favours the bold, especially on the sartorial front. For actress Sydney Sweeney, her press tour and off-duty ensembles merit recognition for their eye-catching qualities. Yet, on the red carpet for her latest film, the psychological horror Immaculate, Sweeney has piqued our interest in what is arguably one of her boldest fashion moments yet.

Hand over heart, this look has elevated Sweeney from a burgeoning style savant to a certified fixture in the fashion industry, all courtesy of a little sculptural Balmain. (And no, we’re not just saying that because the piece featured anatomical hands wrapped around her abdomen.)

Taking to the film’s premiere at the Beyond Fest film festival in California, Sweeney stepped out in a structural art piece designed by creative director Olivier Rousteing for the French maison’s recent Fall/Winter 2024 collection. Similar to how the avant-garde top was styled on the runway, Sweeney sported nothing underneath, giving us the latest addition to the canon of couture-level topless dressing on the red carpet.

The garment itself featured life-sized models of fruit and flowers rendered into a 3-D resin-esque mould. The bottom half added an element of softened contrast to the bold top, with a pair of black pleated pants proving to be the antithesis, and therefore a natural match, to the blooming sheath.

The 26-year-old’s newly debuted Marilyn Monroe bob was combed back into a 2016-approved “wet look”, which also added dimension to the look. (Not that it was needed though, as Sweeney was soon joined by cloaked figures wearing red face masks on the step and repeat.)

The film and its premiere also served as a mini The White Lotus reunion, with Sweeney starring across from Italian breakout Simona Tabasco. (Also known as Mia from the Emmy Award-winning series’ second season.)

In Immaculate, Sweeney helms the film as an American nun who transfers to a convent deep in the Italian countryside before encountering the dark secrets that lie deep within the cloister. With Sweeney also producing the film, it marks her third release in four months. (Sweeney also held major roles in Anyone But You and Madame Web). She stays booked and busy—and in Balmain, too!

Immaculate debuts in Australian theatres on March 22. Watch the trailer here and below:
