Award season’s fanfare drummed up again today with the announcement of the 2024 Academy Award nominees. Being acknowledged by the film industry’s leading body has been conflated with walking home with the gilded Oscar statue itself. So naturally, this year’s class earned the ire of netizens after Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were snubbed from major categories for their work on Barbie.

Though it’s rare for a film to have both critical and commercial success, the plastic, fantastic feminist retelling of an icon broke new ground for female storytellers—grossing a record-breaking and history-making billion dollars at the box office and receiving a hoard of nominations at the 81st Golden Globes and 29th Critics Choice Awards.

Barbie was recognised with eight nominations, including for ‘Best Picture’ (alongside Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things among others), Gerwig and Robbie were omitted from their respective fields; ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’.

The optics of failing to acknowledge these industry pioneers for their trailblazing work is magnetised by Ryan Gosling’s nomination for his performance as Ken for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’ and ‘Best Original Song’.

“Greta Gerwig directed a billion-dollar grossing film which saw Margot Robbie and a cast of women start global conversations about the man-made systems that oppress and silence women and the impossible expectations placed on us from girlhood. So, the Oscars nominated Ken,” wrote the founder of Australian news company Cheek Media, Hannah Ferguson.

This sentiment was echoed across social media and by the cast of Barbie who did receive nominations for their work in the film. Ryan Gosling expressed his gratitude for the nomination while uttering his disappointment for Gerwig and Robbie’s snub.

“There is no Ken without Barbie,” he wrote in a statement. “And there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” he added. “No recognition would be possible for anyone in the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

America Ferrera was nominated for her first Academy Award for her performance as Gloria, a Mattel employee and foil to Robbie’s main character ‘stereotypical’ Barbie. She said of the snub: “Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

Given the online vitriol directed at the Academy regarding these omissions, the ceremony has already become even more of a compelling watch.

Ahead, the full list of nominees, from history-making honours in Lily Gladstone to the unexpected in Bradley Cooper’s ‘Best Actor’ nom.
