Big Little Looks: Charting Nicole Kidman’s Style Evolution Through Her Best Fashion Moments

When honouree Nicole Kidman arrived at the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Awards in a custom Balenciaga gown as gilded as her Oscar statue, we were not only offered a retrospective of her expansive body of work, but the fashion moments presented over her four decades in Hollywood.
There’s the controversial chartreuse Dior gown, designed by then-creative director John Galliano, worn to the 1997 Academy Awards alongside her ex-husband, Tom Cruise. The skin-baring two-piece set adorned for the premiere of the equally risqué Eyes Wide Shut. Her red halterneck Balenciaga gown designed by Nicolas Ghesquière worn in 2007 and subsequent runway debut at Balenciaga’s 51st Haute Couture collection 15 years later in 2022.
Of course, one of her most memorable, the strappy wrap dress designed by Jean Paul Gaultier worn to accept the ‘Best Actress’ award at the 2003 Oscars. (For the uninitiated, Kidman has the distinct privilege of being JPG’s first-ever Haute Couture client, jump-starting his career in custom creations.) Between her recent slinkier outrés and minimalist 90s silhouettes, Kidman is every bit deserving of her place in the fashion world.
Given her recent accolades and upcoming release, we here at GRAZIA felt she was equally worthy of a fashion look back, even despite her current red carpet philosophy. ( “I want to get out, take my dress off and put my jammies on. It’s kind of like the opposite of Cinderella—I’m happy to go home and just go back to me.”) Ahead, we chart Nicole Kidman’s style evolution through her best fashion moments of all time.
