Until we’ve walked a mile from the sprinter van to the step-and-repeat in a celebrity’s sky-high shoes we can only judge the hardships that come with red-carpet appearances from a distance. Not only do these events garner an extreme amount of fanfare in the lead-up, but there’s also a ceremonial amount of grooming, pampering and hard work that precedes the picture-perfect moment that ends up in the media cycle.

Yet, for mainstay fashion fixture Nicole Kidman, the iconic sartorial moments or leading lady megawatt smiles we see aren’t always reflective of a star’s state of mind. In a new interview, the Australian Academy Award winner candidly revealed her red carpet style philosophy for the first time, explaining how sometimes she prefers pyjamas to paparazzi cameras.

“It feels a little unreal at times,” the recent Expats actress explained. “I want to get out, take my dress off and put my jammies on. It’s kind of like the opposite of Cinderella—I’m happy to go home and just go back to me.” Of course, it’s easy for Kidman to say that considering how expertly she commands a red carpet. (Her custom Prada look from the premiere of Robert Eggers’ 2022 action The Norseman still lives in our minds rent-free here at GRAZIA.)

Indeed, when you can get the job of delivering memorable red carpet moments that promote your upcoming job before the clock strikes midnight, why worry about staying late when a relaxing hotel room bed awaits? We’re sure this is advice Dakota Johnson follows, too.

Of course, Kidman’s admission doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing less of her on the red carpet anytime soon. On the contrary, in fact. In the profile, Kidman also discussed her and Reese Witherspoon’s plans for the upcoming third season of Big Little Lies. (Which, if the first two seasons are anything to go by, could promise a cast reunion of titanic proportions and a red carpet that “mothers” so hard it resets our cultural fabric.)

“I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different. But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness and you want to spend time together,” she said of organising several A-list schedules to align on filming dates.

Though there is a timeline for when the cult-classic HBO drama will return to our screens, Kidman and Witherspoon are keeping it close to their chests. Just let us in on where the Big Little Lie season three premiere after-party sleepover is, yeah?
