Nicole Kidman receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute wasn’t the only first to occur during the star-studded ceremony in Hollywood over the weekend. (For the uninitiated, the Oscar winner became the first Australian to earn the prestigious industry accolade.)
Indeed, Kidman ensured the gilded outing was a family affair as she was joined by her husband, country musician Keith Urban, and their rarely-seen daughters, Sunday Rose, 15, and Faith Margaret, 13. The teenagers are amongst the few ‘nepotism babies’ who remain out of the spotlight. Yet on the red carpet lining the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the couple’s children used the platform as their entrée into stardom.
Kidman revealed in her acceptance speech that this was no coincidence. “There’s an enormous amount of luck in my life, but there’s also the most important thing—love, big, big love,” the 56-year-old shared, gesturing to her husband and children. “Right there is the love of my life and the loves of my life,” she continued. “My daughters have never been anywhere publicly with me on a red carpet, tonight was their first night, so they’re here, Sunday and Faith.”
Kidman’s sister, Antonia, and her nieces and nephews, including Channel 7 presenter Lucia Hawley, also joined her at the event.
Kidman opted for a gold custom Balenciaga dress from the luxuriate’s influencer-culture-inspired Pre-Fall 2024 collection. (Which, coincidentally, was staged only a few blocks away from the event in the ritzy suburb of Hancock Park). Her slinky black heels were courtesy from Gianvito Rossi.
Kidman’s Big Little Lies and The Hours co-star, Meryl Streep, presented the actress with the award, joking to the crowd about her “traumatizing” experience working with such a formidable force. Speaking of their time onset during the second season of the television adaption of Liane Moriarty’s best-selling novel.
“That’s the time when I really came within breathing distance of the formidable gifts Nicole has, and her process and her seismic bank of emotion she’s got locked up inside there and her stamina and her drive to be an artist and her discipline,” Streep shared. “I haven’t recovered from that first day, I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” Streep added. “For me, it was traumatizing because I thought this woman is a Valkyrie.”
Reese Witherspoon, who also starred and co-produced the hit series alongside Kidman, was in attendance, too. Kidman was honoured at the event for her impactful performances in culturally significant projects like Stanley Krubrick’s Eye Wide Shut, Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! and Jonathan Glazer’s Birth. She’ll soon reprise the role of Celeste Wright in the upcoming third season of Big Little Lies, which is currently in production.
Ahead, a close-up of the career milestone ceremony.
