It’s been a day since The Cut shone a light on the ‘bow tax’ plaguing fashion—that is the price hike incurred on pieces adorned with a ribbon—yet Nicole Kidman’s latest look is proving that the coquettish motif is showing no signs of bowing out.
The actress is in New York to attend a gala hosted by fashion conglomerate Kering, who for the uninvited owns luxuriates like Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen. The French-owned firm’ hosted its second annual ‘Caring For Women’ fundraising gala with the Kering Foundation.
For the occasion, Kidman looked to the recent runways for sartorial inspiration, embracing the ribbon-saturated designs of Sandy Liang and Collina Strada in her Princess-inspired Balenciaga gown.
Emulating Grace Kelly’s iconic pastel dress from Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief, the 56-year-old embraced the merits of old Hollywood for her New York minute.
Given Kidman previously walked in Balenciaga’s Haute Couture show, it’s no wonder why she chose a dress from the brand’s most recent couture foray.
Kidman looked to the Fall/Winter 2023 Haute Couture collection for her ensemble, sporting a customised version of ‘Look 53’ in a bespoke baby blue hue rather than the pretty-in-pink variation sported on the runway.
The strapless dress featured a quaint bodice decorated with chiffon bows that cascaded down the entirety of the sheath into streamers that grazed the floor. Accenting the ribbon theme further, the gown featured a statement satin bow that gathered at the waist.
Though this event bookended the Spring/Summer 2024 New York Fashion Week season, the step-and-repeat wasn’t as littered with new season pieces as the MTV VMA pink carpet was. (See: Saweetie in new season AREA and Kim Shui).
Kim Kardashian, Christy Turlington, Isabella Huppert and Zoë Kravitz also joined Kering for the event.
Though Kidman certainly delivered a Princess fantasy through her Cinderella meets the Princess of Monaco silhouette, thankfully this fairytale ended with her keeping her glass slipper firmly planted on her feet. A conclusion courtesy of Balenciaga’s second skin pantaboot stilettos.
