We’re not in Monterey anymore. Away from the glitz and glamour of California, two of Hollywood’s heavyweights, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, reunited in Nashville for an unexpected occasion: a soccer game.
A fortuitous reunion between some of our favourite actresses is always a welcome occasion, especially with the location of their rendezvous signals the pair have caught the contagious football fever sweeping the globe.
But, we can’t help but think Kidman and Witherspoon’s pitch-side meeting is entirely Big Little Lies coded. A prosaic meeting place surely enough to rival Liane Moriarty’s fictional concoctions.
Plus, with the former co-stars both co-executive producers of the cult-favourite HBO drama, could it be possible the pair were plotting a potential third season of the show in-between penalty kicks?
If this was an episode of the award-winning book adaption, we could imagine that Witherspoon’s ‘Madeleine’ would make Sangria in honour of Spain’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 win, while Kidman’s ‘Celeste’ would wear Matilda’s scarf despite their fourth-place position (for obvious reasons).
Laura Dern’s ‘Renata’ may even consider buying a stake in a national team in a bid to get her fortune back, while Shailene Woodley’s ‘Jane’ and Zoë Kravitz’s ‘Bonnie’ care less about the side-line gossip and more about the actual game played.
Whatever the circumstance to bring the ‘Monterey Five’ back together, we implore the powers at be to write it into existence.
Witherspoon and Kidman were invited to the match by Victoria and David Beckham, so perhaps Posh Spice could even join the fold as a series regular.
We can see it now: the fashion designer makes her return to the screen since her film and television debut in Spice World by pulling up to the ritzy seaside suburb in a double-decker Union Jack bus.
After the game, Beckham, Witherspoon and Kidman all took to social media to share (gloat?) their encounter. “Great night with my girlfriend,” wrote Kidman, with her caption accompanied by soccer balls and sparkle emojis.
Given that Kidman and Witherspoon are both members of the Screen Actor’s Guild and are supporting the SAG-AFTRA strike, here’s hoping their next meet-up takes place on the picket lines. An opportune moment to scout more A-listers to join their gaggle of big, little liars.
