The last year of TikTok ‘cores’ and micro trends have left many of us pondering: What will holiday style look like in 2023?

Where trends used to guide us towards discovery, endless loops of aesthetic designations and recycled fads follow the same tired cycle: Labeled. Deconstructed. Packaged up and then oversaturated before being tossed aside once again. Not only are we up against this push towards a monocultural style, but we lose sight of our innate taste in the process. It may be human nature to categorise, to pick apart and pigeonhole. But perhaps we rush to label things when the reality is that true style is ineffable. And perhaps it’s in this greyness that personal style really lives.

In our ever-changing world full of varied demands, why should fashion be reduced to definition? Instead, the modern woman’s wardrobe holds great power in its infinite interpretations—something that Miu Miu’s founder and creative director Miuccia Prada (who is affectionately referred to as ‘Miu Miu’ by friends) has not only leant into but built her career off understanding. In Prada’s world, one can effortlessly embrace innovation along with the savoir-faire of old-world elegance.

One person who holistically embodies this sentiment is Emma Corrin. Lauded as one of Hollywood’s most stylish people, yet someone whose style refuses to neatly fit in a box. There is no formula to what Corrin wears, nor is there any guessing what they will wear next. Yet, they boast impeccable taste, probing the boundaries of occasions, eras, and silhouettes with whimsical curiosity and graceful confidence.

No doubt, this is something that has resonated with Prada herself and something she demonstrates with thoughtful clarity season after season with Miu Miu’s dynamic collections. And for the holiday season, a time when we often scramble to define our looks with moodboards and festive dress codes, Miu Miu offers a different perspective, one that embraces the undefinable.

Shot by Zoë Ghertner, with art direction by Edward Quarmby, the Miu Miu holiday campaign features intimate portraits of Corrin and the house’s new season offerings. Leisurely sprawled across pristine carpets, antiques frame them amid a nondescript locale. No implication of time or place stands out, particularly with their surroundings where pieces like glittering dresses and plush knits flow out of suitcases. Or, Marshall headphones and Polaroid cameras—both of whom Miu Miu collaborated with this season—ever so suggestive of travel. The question of arrival or departure? Indiscernable. But Corrin is far from lost or stuck. Instead, there is an inviting sense of possibility—someone who is always exactly where they want to be, doing and wearing precisely as they please.

Styling by Lotta Volkova expands on this untraceable mood of refinement. Traditional markers of glamour evoke an elegance of the past, informed by the multifaceted needs of modern life and brought to life by the bold spirit of Corrin.

Fluid black cady, shearling, tactile tweeds, and sparkling organza embellished with crystal summon the opulence of traditional partywear, but a play on contemporary sensibilities renews their significance. Elsewhere, glossed leathers, soft cashmere, and fluid jersey afford the ultimate luxury of freedom of movement and effortless allure. And polished cardigan jackets and pencil skirts are layered over visible lingerie in a playful twist.

It could be said that we turn to trends because we’re taught to doubt ourselves. Coupled with the overwhelming vastness of fashion in the digital age, it’s no wonder we question what we should wear over what we want to wear. But this season, we take a leaf out of Miu Miu’s book and embrace the uncertainty for what it is: a liberating conquest over labels and definitions. With confidence in who you are and what you’re doing, perhaps it’s time to set our own dress codes.

Ahead, the GRAZIA team shares the Miu Miu pieces making up their own unique holiday dress code.

MIU MIU SATIN BUCKET WITH SYNTHETIC CRYSTALS, $4100 SHOP NOW

“Coming to terms with my own unique sense of style has been a process. In getting to know myself better and letting go of what I feel I’m expected to wear, I’ve been leaning into the fun of experimentation. One of the main things I’ve learned about myself is that I love an element of sparkle. It’s a strange thought to anyone who has known me and my monochromatic ways, but it’s true. That doesn’t mean I’m willing to compromise on practicality, though. This Miu Miu bucket bag will complete any outfit I choose this holiday season, and, best of all, can hold ten times more essentials than my other party bags.” — Pema Bakshi, Fashion Features Editor

MIU MIU MATELASSÉ NAPPA LEATHER CARD HOLDER, $730 SHOP NOW

“As we head into the new year, I’m making a concerted effort to reduce my reliance on technology. That means swapping my Apple Wallet for this tangible, soft-as-butter card holder. The textured Matelassé detailing on the Nappa leather brings a unique addition to an otherwise classic silhouette, but the black colourway makes it versatile enough to take everywhere with me. The plethora of pockets makes it seamless to stash any card or trinket: my library membership à la Emma Corrin in the FW23 collection, cards from my favourite restaurants, or words of affirmation I pick up on my travels. Who needs social media when I can fit an entire world in my purse?” — Ava Gilchrist, Senior Fashion Writer

MIU MIU SATIN SANDALS, $1800 SHOP NOW

“The first time I moved out of home, my new roommate remarked that my wardrobe resembled Diana Ross’. Everything was embellished, bejewelled, or sequinned. Many years later, I am still drawn to the most sparkly piece, which is any collection of any given season. These Miu Miu satin sandals with delicate artificial crystals, complete with gold bows at the toes, are my ultimate holiday heel. They’re the perfect (statement) accompaniment to a party mini or jeans and a tee. And of course, they feed the inner 20-something-year-old looking for another shiny item to add to her wardrobe.” — Jessica Bailey, Editorial Director

MIU MIU GLIMPSE SUNGLASSES, $630 SHOP NOW

“The silly season tends to bring with it a lot of, well, silliness, and I’m a far cry from the 20-year-old version of myself who could bounce back quickly after a big night. I’ll lean heavily on these opaque Miu Miu sunglasses as my holiday security blanket for the morning commutes and daytime soirées. They’ll mask my tired eyes but still prove a chic addition to an outfit.” — Pema Bakshi, Fashion Features Editor
