Trading in her Captain Marvel spandex for magenta tulle at Rodarte today in Los Angeles, actress-of-the-moment Brie Larson shared some career advice given to her by one bride-to-be-Jennifer Lawrence.
After winning the Best Actress Oscar in 2016 for her role as a woman held captive in Room, Larson confided in fellow feminist superhero Lawrence (the previous years’ Academy Award-winner). Despite the tremendous high of being awarded the accolade to end all accolades, Larson was feeling surprisingly low. As InStyle beautifully described it, she was “as vulnerable and she was driven”. She found herself thinking what some of us think regularly in a crisis, ‘What would Jennifer Lawrence do?’
“I was like, ‘I don’t feel any different. I don’t feel better about myself. I still don’t feel like I’m a good actress,’” says Larson. “[Jennifer] was like, ‘Oh, yeah. That’s totally normal. I’ve had the same thing. Don’t think of it like that. Think of it as, like, you got your Ph.D. You’re certified; that’s it. It doesn’t change anything. You can still f**k up. Every judge is still human.’”
Larson stars as the Carol Danvers – or Captain Marvel – in the new movie of the same name (hitting Australian cinemas on March 7). But Carol wasn’t always a Captain. When Marvel created her comic book character in 1968, she was known as Ms. Marvel. It wasn’t until 2012 that she got her new uniform – one that reflected her background in the air force. “She is Earth’s mightiest hero. Period. Not Earth’s mightiest female hero,” says Larson.
