It’s only been a few days, but so far New York Fashion Week has more than fulfilled our brief for sartorial and cosmetic escapism. We’ve seen good old-fashioned glamour return at Badgley Mischka, we fell headfirst into the psychedelic displays at Anna Sui and found romanticism in the most 2020 of places – the grocery store – with Jason Wu.
But the beauty hasn’t disappointed either, with emerging designer RVNG doing justice to the long-forgotten going-out eyes and lips we once sported, in contrast with Wu’s show offering refreshingly low maintenance hairstyles that are perfect for post-pandemic life.
And now LavieByCK has served up a slew of opulent makeup looks that are almost guaranteed to act as inspiration for the next season of Euphoria. Think pearls, crystals and sunset-hued shadow, created to fit in with the regal theme that saw designer Claude Kameni reimagine the classic movie Coming To America.
As a Black-owned luxury fashion brand, the LavieByCK show spotlighted the talents of Black creatives, from models to the teams who helped bring Kameni’s video showcase of The Royal Empire to life. Award-winning makeup artist Ashley Wallace developed the striking makeup looks, with pearls and crystals and colourful eyeshadow adorning the eyes of Kameni’s Queens – each of whom received a unique makeup look.
Shades of crimson, orange and gold were also employed throughout to create a sunset effect on the eyes. Hair was styled by Jeannine Faiguem to look natural and textured, rounding out the presentation’s powerful theme that worships the beauty and strength of Black women.
Raised in Cameroon before moving to the USA at eight years old, Kameni’s inherent love of colour and pattern is evidently extended to the decorated beauty looks in the show. Her designs, which have been worn by the likes of Tracee Ellis Ross and Janet Jackson, are created to merge her roots in African prints with a modern take on glamour – a philosophy that Wallace and Faiguem was clearly able to infuse into the makeup, too.
We can’t wait to see what’s next.
