In the year 2020, you could be forgiven for switching off entirely when it comes to fashion trends. When one’s most exciting part of the week is heading to the supermarket or, if you’re lucky, to a socially-distanced outdoor restaurant with a curfew, and street style is all but non-existent, it’s hard to get all that excited about investing in new wardrobe pieces. Dare I say it, even buying cute outfits for Instagram alone is wearing thin.

But in amongst the chaos, one trend has managed to cement itself on all three of our current mediums: social media, the runway and, most importantly, Zoom.

The Peter Pan collar, a style worn a lot by Princess Diana in the ’80s, first started making the rounds again last season, when Ganni’s white Peter Pan collared poplin blouse was released and quickly eaten up by every Instagram influencer alive. Since then, the style has been seen in collections by everyone from JW Anderson to Miu Miu.

Now, in a full-circle moment, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has tried out the trend for her latest appearance, wearing a satin ivory button-down shirt with ruched shoulders and a black Peter Pan collar by Ghost London.

The Duchess, who was hosting a video call to speak with the families of those in the British Armed Forces, matched her on-trend top with a pair of black cigarette pants and a pair of chic pearl drop earrings. An outfit that would make her late mother-in-law proud.
