A day after wearing a suite of sleek 90s corporate staples to watch the total solar eclipse in New York, Kaia Gerber has looked to another decade for style inspiration. This time, a period she was actually alive during. (Albeit in designer diapers or wearing Versace’s youthful baroque kids line—which she went on to be the face of at only ten years old.)

The supermodel and recent star of the Slim Aarons-inspired Apple TV+ drama, Palm Royale, took cues from the early 2000s as she arrived at Olivia Rodgrigo’s Guts Tour in New York wearing head-to-toe Paloma Wool. It wasn’t the asymmetrically sliced long sleeve or even the navy straight-leg trousers from the ‘It’ girl-approved Barcelona-based brand that piqued the interest of style savants. Rather, the chunky oversized belt she chose to layer over the off-the-shoulder top.

If the photograph wasn’t dated, you could’ve easily convinced us Gerber was attending her family’s annual star-studded Halloween party as a homage to the futile, oversized belt-laden street-style wardrobe worn by her supermodel forbearers. Though a belt has long been a centrepiece in the off-duty uniform of Cindy Crawford, the 22-year-old eschewed her mother’s clean-cut, all-American template of denim jeans and tucked-in shirts for a more bohemian silhouette reminiscent of Kate Moss.

As those who experienced the chunky belt trend first-hand would be aware, millennial accessory options only consisted of distressed hobo bags, useless skinny scarfs the size of floss, and Sienna Miller-pioneered boho belts. But rather than looking to the rich archive of vintage fashion staples at Gerber’s disposal, the burgeoning actress gravitated towards a new season piece from Gimagaus. (Another cult-favourite label in high rotation of the wardrobes of mainstay fashion fixtures like Emily Ratajkowski and Lily-Rose Depp.)

Perhaps channelling this polarising noughties staple is fitting for the occasion, given Rodrigo’s status as the Princess of Vintage. The Todd Oldham micro skirt and crop top (originally worn by Shalom Harlow and Amber Valetta in that Spring/Summer 1995 runway) Rodrigo to her album release party is proof of her archival prowess.

With Coachella just around the corner, Gerber’s resurgence of the body-contouring oversized belt couldn’t have come at a better time. We here at GRAZIA are ready to embrace the countless coin belts that will soon bombard our social media feeds. Whether they’ll translate outside the arena of kitschy concert wear remains to be seen, but like Gerber’s eclipse-proof sunglasses, we’ll be cautiously watching on from the sidelines.
