Though method acting is a tool used by thespians to fully immerse themselves into their character’s universe, the sartorial choices of actors often provide additional insight into their current state of mind.
From Reese Witherspoon being contractually allowed to keep her wardrobe upon the conclusion of Legally Blonde 2, to Sarah Jessica Parker following in the footsteps of the Manolo Blahnik-adoring Carrie Bradshaw and founding her own shoe brand, it’s sometimes the case that your characters stay with you far after you’ve shed the role.
Burgeoning Hollywood starlet, Lily-Rose Depp, is the latest A-lister to prove that theory true. After her breakout role as tortured pop star, Jocelyn, in HBO’s polarising series The Idol, it’s clear that the closet of the ‘World Class Sinner’ is living just as rent-free in Depp’s mind as the rest of us.
Of course, when you have the distinct advantage of having played Jocelyn, channelling her sleaze-drenched style is easier than it seems.
Since the show concluded, Depp has been on her noughtiest behaviour with paparazzi pictures capturing her jaunts around the ‘gutters of Hollywood’, as Los Angeles is described in The Idol by showrunners Sam Levinson and Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, in full Y2K force.
Though Depp’s pre-The Idol aesthetic felt more French-inspired than Sunset Strip-influenced–a trait courtesy of her penchant for Chanel and coquettish off-duty looks–it’s clear Depp has drunk Jocelyn’s kool-aid and embraced the sultry silhouettes her character sported on the show through her off-screen attire.
Her most recent foray includes a vintage Vivienne Westwood trompe l’oeil long sleeve adorned with puckered cherry-red lips of Westwood muse and English model Sara Stockbridge. A nod to Depp’s sultry direct-to-camera moment that opened the entire series, perhaps?
Elsewhere in Hollywood, Depp was papped channelling a 2000s ‘It’ girl in a sheer cardigan-style button-up adorned with glass-blown fixtures, blue denim jeans and blue-grey Margiela tabis. Yet, it was her nursing of a glass of white wine in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other that was the pièce de résistance.
Of course, how could we omit to mention her lunch date look, which included a lace Mary Quant bodysuit, a white mini Maryam Nassir Zadeh skirt and a studded, gimp-style cat mask from Pechuga Vintage.
Depp did try to foreshadow it in the show, but when it comes to her new style era, it’s clear she’s “just a freak, yeah…”
