If orange is the new black, then pyjama dressing is the new sports luxe. Unless you’ve been living on the sartorial moon, you’ll know sleepwear as daywear has been one of the hottest trends both on and off the runway for the past season – and it’s showing no signs of falling from favour any time soon.

The fact it’s one of the easiest trends to master, along with the most comfortable (no surprises there), means you’ll be seeing plenty of this look in the lead-up to Christmas.

It’s not hard to team silk and satin fabric sleepwear with other luxe pieces for formal looks, but where things get tricky is the dressed-down zone. How do you mix high-end silk pyjamas with distressed denim for day and not look like you only got half-ready in the morning?

The secret is in the styling and specific pieces you pick. These tips from Sydney-based silk lounge wear designer and Natalija label founder, Natalija Bouropoulos, will help you add a little bedroom to your best street style. After all, in Natalija’s words, “why wear Lycra when you can wear silk?”.

Natalija’s top PJs-with-denim styling tips

Tip 1 Silk sleepwear works better than cotton; it has more of a luxe feel and better drape. As for colours and prints the usual rules apply – neutrals are classic, bold prints will look fashion forward.

Tip 2 The best denim is trans-seasonal with a vintage wash. Jeans are ideally cropped and with a stylish tapered fit. Both make it easy for you to dress up or down your silk pyjama pieces.

Tip 3 Take your favourite silk pyjama shirt out of the bedroom with cropped flared jeans. Add a flat mule for the perfect play on proportion.

Tip 4 There are endless possibilities to style a silk slip. Be inspired by the minimalist mood of the 90s and wear yours over a white cotton T-shirt, paired with a vintage denim jacket.

Tip 5 The key to rocking this pyjamas-with-denim look is to avoid the “just-rolled-out-of-bed” factor, so add some polish to your hair and make-up.
