It’s one of the most unusual, but easiest, trends of the past two seasons – in fact, some are already arguing that sleepwear is replacing sports luxe for all-day comfort dressing. (Not saying we agree, just sayin’ they’re sayin’.)

On that note, we spoke to inherently stylish former international banker-turned-luxury sleepwear designer Jasmine Lindsay of Jasmine & Will about the celeb-fave phenom, plus her best tips for pulling off pyjama dressing in daylight without looking like a fashion victim.

What’s the best thing about the sleepwear as daywear trend? “It’s easy, a little sexy and totally chic if you select the right shapes and fabrics.

How do you make it work in winter? “I have silk pyjama tops and spaghetti strap slips on frequent rotation all year round. Now the weather is cooler, I layer my silk slips with chunky knits and wear my wrap silk pyjama shirts with jeans.”

What were your thoughts when you saw this trend on the last two seasons’ runways? “I’m slightly biased so of course I loved it. Its official, pyjama dressing is no longer reserved for the bedroom. The trend has been gaining traction for a few seasons, meaning the trend is here to stay.”

Who do you think wears the trend well?Hanneli Mustaparta, a long supporter of the pyjama wear as outwear trend nailed it recently in a baby blue and red Prada set. Circa 1990s Kate Moss is also practically synonymous with the slinky silk slip dress. I’m loving the comeback of this sleepwear inspired style for Spring/Summer 2017.

Lindsay’s tips for making the trend work

1. The full pyjama look needs height to allow the hem to fall flatteringly, so opt for an open toed heel sandal.

2. If you just wear the top, style it as you would a silk shirt: roll up the sleeves and team with jeans or a leather skirt. The contrast of slinky and tough works well.

3. Layer your silk slip over T-shirts and turtlenecks for a dressed down daytime look.

4. Go for silk over cotton – it’s sleeker, more polished and much more forgiving.

What are the big don’ts? Wearing pyjamas as clothes doesn’t mean invoking the whole “I woke up like this” ethos. Keep it tailored and stick with luxe fabrics in classic colours and prints. No flannel, no pink teddy bears and definitely no Ugg boots outside the house.

What’s the easiest way to dip your toe into the trend gently? Start with a piped silk sleep shirt in a classic colour and your favourite jeans. It’s easy to build an outfit from there. Pair it back with a heel and blazer for night or mules and rolled sleeves for a relaxed daytime look.
