Gwyneth Paltrow and her ex-wife, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, are the originators of consciously uncoupling—the phrase the duo coined to announce the end of their marriage in 2014 and the subsequent beginning of their life together as friends and co-parents. Though it was laughed at at the time and dubbed another of Paltrow’s Goop-adjacent woo-woo ideas, over the years the pair have continued to prove exes can be friends: they live near each other, they holiday together, and they not only get along with, but are friends with, each other’s new partners.

Last night, Paltrow attended Gucci’s fashion show in Los Angeles with none other than Dakota Johnson, Martin’s girlfriend (fiancé?) of four years. Though the pair have expressed their fondness for each other in the past, the red carpet event marked the first time they’ve been publicly photographed together.

In a video captured by Variety, Paltrow can be seen in a red velvet suit by the Italian fashion house (which she pulled from the archives), while Johnson, a longtime muse of Gucci designer Alessandro Michele, wears a sparkly mini dress with fishnet tights. The pair laugh together and Paltrow hands her phone to someone out of frame before they stand side-by-side for photographers:

Gucci recently skipped Milan Fashion Week after opting out of the seasonal fashion calendar, but the house more than made up for it with its Hollywood Boulevard star-studded show. Walking the runway was Jared Leto, Phoebe Bridgers, Jodie Turner-Smith, Macaulay Culkin, Jeremy Pope, and Johnson’s sister, Grace Johnson, while joining Paltrow and Johnson front row were Lizzo, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Tracee Ellis Ross, Gabrielle Union,Olivia Wilde, and Serena Williams (to name but a few).

Speaking of Johnson in January 2020, Paltrow said, “I love her. I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.” She continued, “I always start to think of the ampersand sign — what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning in to something like that.”

Paltrow also posted a tribute to Johnson on Instagram to mark the actress’ 30th birthday in 2019.

Johnson and Martin began dating in 2018 and sparked engagement rumours in December, when Johnson was seen wearing a large emerald ring on her left finger while out shopping in West Hollywood.

Oh, to imagine that Gucci wedding gown.
