Google has released its annual list of the most-searched beauty questions, while simultaneously creating a perfect snapshot of a year unlike any other. The onset of a global pandemic saw us retreat into our abodes, where our homes played host to our offices, our (virtual) events, our gyms and yes, our beauty salons.
2020 also saw beauty become a source of personal solace for many during a time of great unrest and uncertainty. Under the umbrella of self-care, taking the time to soothe and nourish one’s face, body and hair provided a moment of calm amongst the chaos, or even just as a way to punctuate the start and end of each day during long periods of lockdown. Celebrities weren’t immune to it either, sharing their many cosmetic experiments on Instagram – presenting Dua Lipa dyeing her own hair as exhibit A below.
So it should come as no surprise that this years’ list of beauty questions all pertain to DIY personal care solutions. With the pandemic rendering skin, hair and nail salons closed, we were left to our own devices for perhaps the first time since we took up such rituals. A lot of us had also been ushered into isolation with little notice and therefore a lot of maintenance to navigate.
And what did we do when faced with such complex conundrums? We consulted Google, of course. About our ideal skincare regimens, the best way to wash our hands (v important), re-creating facials from home, and we had a whole lot questions about our hair – from how to trim it ourselves (eeek!) to how to colour it (double eeek!) and how to ‘plop’, which is a clever styling technique for managing curly hair without heat.
