No matter how unconventional or bizarre, Gwyneth Paltrow has grown a huge and steady fan base on her wellness blog and subsequent product line, GoopHer cleanses and beauty routines have garnered plenty of headlines of their own. Remember that five-day detox which involved completely forgoing gluten, caffeine, alcohol and dairy? It’s true; we’ve been tempted plenty of times to undergo a juice cleanse or detox in a bid to increase energy levels and earn a flat stomach.

This week former COO, Elise Loehnen, went on the record to share her own experiences of the cleanses she underwent while an employee at Goop which she says “distorted” her body image. Loehnen left Goop in October 2020 to write a book and start a podcast, Pulling the Thread. On Instagram in promoting her podcast and a recent wellness program, the 42-year-old vowed she’d never do another cleanse again.

“To me, it had become synonymous with dieting and restriction, and I felt like I was not in a healthy relationship with my body, where I was always trying to punish it [and] bring it under control,” the writer said.

“When I talked with my friend @ellenvoramd on Pulling the Thread recently, we explored diet and she reminded me that wellness culture can be toxic AND that eating an abundance of overly processed foods can also be toxic,” she said in the social media caption. “And I realised in that moment that I’ve kind of deserted how my body actually feels — as much as I’ve enjoyed two years of eating whatever my young kids want. And that I’m clearly being called back to a place somewhere in the middle because my stomach often hurts.”

Paltrow was slammed by beauty editors and SPF experts in April 2021 when she released a dangerous ‘tutorial’ on sunscreen use.

Don’t get us wrong, we love the wellness guru for her sage sex advice and dry brushing techniques, but when it comes to dieting or eating better, it’s best you leave that to a doctor.
