One look at Elizabeth Debicki’s chiselled face and big, blue eyes and it’s clear why she was a no-brainer for the role of Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown. But as she’s proven, it’s not just looks that the two women have in common.

At the premiere of the hit show’s sixth season, where the Australian actress shines in her depiction of the late royal in her final years, Debicki stunned in a very Diana-esque look.

For the red carpet, the 33-year-old highlighted her statuesque frame in a black midi dress from Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection. Featuring a layered off-shoulder neckline detail and a structured bodice, the dress was eerily reminiscent of Princess Diana’s iconic ‘Revenge Dress’. Debicki, styled by celebrity favourite Elizabeth Saltzman, even wore translucent tights and black pointed Manolo Blahnik pumps to emulate the look aptly.

First taking on the coveted role from Emma Corrin in the fifth season of The Crown, Debicki revealed that the dress was a significant point of interest from the get-go. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress joked that the congratulatory messages she received when she nabbed the role were overwhelmingly laden with questions about whether she would get to don the legendary look.

For those unfamiliar with the significance of the Revenge dress in royal (and fashion) history, the velvet off-shoulder dress by Greek designer Christina Stambolian debuted at an event in 1995. It gets its name from its context, as the recently single royal stepped out in the risqué ensemble just after then-husband Prince Charles, whom she was separated from, was revealed to be having an affair with his old love interest, Camilla Parker Bowles. Thus, her spectacular Divorce-era style was born.

“It fascinated me how entranced people were with that dress,” the actress added in the interview, but the significance of the dress was not lost on Debicki. When it came to recreating the scene, she recalled that it felt “very significant and quite powerful, but also it provoked something in me as an actor. I can’t really explain it. It’s pretty incredible that a dress would represent a moment in history or that this human’s life would represent so much and become so iconic. So that was a big day on set for me!”

Elsewhere at the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, Debicki proudly posed with her ‘sons’, Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards, who portray younger versions of Princess Diana’s children, Prince William and Prince Harry, respectively.
