A lavishly decorated mobile home was the setting for Dsquared2’s Fall-Winter 2021 co-ed video presentation, unveiled on Sunday, February 28, amid Milan Fashion Week. The short film perfectly represents the luxury label’s intentional mix of contrasts: sporty and glam, relaxed and extravagant, and disordered, yet deliberate. The latter is especially prominent in the brand’s FW21 collection, seemingly born for blacking out on Veuve Clicquot with your best friends. It’s essentially the luxury version of the most carefree outfit you could pull together from your wardrobe—one worth talking about for years to come.
Dean and Dan Caten’s FW21 ready-to-wear collection and its accompanying short film are extraordinarily chaotic, not unlike the brothers’ pre-fall 2021 collection. “She is a cool chick that doesn’t give a s-–t,” they described of the lineup at the time, adding that, “It’s not about a logic, it’s about a piece that she loves.” That same sentiment reigns true for the upcoming season, which features multi-layered ensembles of mismatching patterns and textures, plaid button-downs decorated in crystal appliqués, and minidresses reminiscent of disco balls, worn under a floral puffer, topped off with a tiara. Pumps are worn with socks for warmth and to make onlookers say, “Who is she?”
According to a WWD report, the twin founders took inspiration for their FW21 collection from the 2017 comedy-drama film, I, Tonya—most notably, American figure skater Tonya Harding’s unapologetic and fearless attitude. Additionally, it feels as though the brand’s founders have absolutely had it with the coronavirus pandemic. That’s precisely why they’ve imbued their line with a hearty dose of confident rebellion, in the manner of the edgy fashion-lover who’s going out for the first time post-pandemic. “Let’s go back to who we were and who we are. And we are a bit more trashy,” said Dan in an interview about the FW21 collection. “F–k it up a bit, make her a bitch again, she doesn’t give a shit.”
