“Surely, of all the wonders in the world, the horizon is the greatest,” — Freya Stark.
For Spring/Summer 2027, Max Mara looked to the women who refused to let the boundaries of their era define them. Freya Stark, Osa Johnson, Eva Dickson, Amelia Earhart and Beryl Markham were among the 1930s trail-blazing explorers whose lives inspired the collection, and their influence is felt in a wardrobe designed for more contemporary expeditions.
At the centre was the safari jacket, a fitting choice for a House whose history is so deeply rooted in outerwear. This season, creative director Ian Griffiths reworked the utilitarian classic in textured linen and gabardine, stretching it into long, loose duster coats, cutting it short and belted, or treating it almost like casual shirting. Worn open over white tank tops and matching trousers, the linen versions even offered a relaxed, vintage-tinged take on summer suiting.
Elsewhere, the collection juxtaposed utility against something more ethereal. Teddies, fluid gored skirts, and slinky knits brought a little salon languor to the otherwise functional wardrobe. Tailoring, meanwhile, got a tactical update, too, with cargo vests engineered to sit neatly over matching jackets, aviator-inspired outerwear coming complete with leather straps and D-rings, and multi-bags shifting between crossbody styles, clutches, and rucksacks.
Overall, the collection was practical without feeling overly serious or pragmatic. An adventurous wardrobe that never compromises on good taste, whether expeditions include “the school run, the cross-town rush hour, or the pivot from boardroom showdown to equally high-stakes gala.”
