In 2024, it appears that no public setting is safe from becoming an arena for celebrity street style. Once private domains like airport terminals, Erewhon car parks and dinner tables have been transformed into platforms for A-listers to model (and often times peddle) their personal style. But just when we thought we had exhausted every environment, Dakota Johnson has dutifully turned our attention to one unsung territory often overlooked by sartorialists: on set.

Yes, where actors are ironically the most private shooting in front of cameras—and all the glance we get from them mid-production is while walking to and fro from their trailer—Johnson has subverted this seclusion by leaning into the theatrics that comes with the territory. Today in New York, the actress has piqued the interest of fashion adherents and chroniclers by stepping out in two contrasting looks while on set for her upcoming project.

The first in question was a quintessential on-the-go ensemble consisting of brown corduroy trousers, a white cropped shirt from Re/Done, Bottega Veneta sunglasses and a black cap. Proving her calibre as a star with personal style is worth imitating, she accessorised the look by diligently following the viral ‘pop of red’ trend and tying a scarlet cashmere sweater around her shoulders.

The second look—which may or may not be a costume for the film she’s working on—was an appropriate springtime dress from cult-favourite California label DÔEN. The buttery yellow midi was made of a bias-cut sheer fabric screen printed with pastel botanical motifs. With Johnson’s day-to-day uniform typically consisting of some sort of trouser and jacket combination, it’s safe to assume this stern departure from her usual aesthetic can be treated as some form of guerrilla marketing for the movie.

Johnson is currently filming Celine Song’s upcoming sophomore release, titled Materialists. Starring alongside Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, Johnson is reported to portray a “professional matchmaker who gets involved with a wealthy man but still harbours feelings for the broke actor-waiter she left behind”, as per Deadline.

Given the critical acclaim that Song’s debut (Past Lives) received, any insight into this new body of work will expectedly draw attention. So why shouldn’t Johnson capitalise on this to flaunt any contractual obligations with luxuriate maisons or further position herself as a style savant?

Plus, if stars are already drawing controversy for leaked photos in their costumes (see: Margot Robbie as roller skate Barbie in Venice Beach on the set of Greta Gerwig’s box-office smash, or Blake Lively as ‘Lily’ in the screen adaption of It Ends With Us), this stage feels pertinent to be parlayed into a display of fashion.

Don’t expect someone to yell ‘cut’ on this mode, we predict on-set dressing as the next frontier of celebrity style. A-listers might not be bidding method dressing farewell just yet, but watch this space.
