Celebrity relationships can often feel like fifty shades of uncertainty, especially when the dealings of notoriously private partners are exacerbated by tabloid gossip. One of the longest-standing couples in Hollywood, Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin, were victims of the rumour mill over the weekend after both the Daily Mail and TMZ reported that the pair had split. (Or given this the Coldplay frontman we’re talking about, “consciously uncoupled”.)
Despite both publications publishing news of their breakup that was verified by anonymous third-party sources, a representative of the Madame Web actress came forward to denounce the gossip and set the story straight.
On August 16, a spokesperson told E! News that the breakup rumours were “not true,” adding, “They are happily together.” Johnson was also spotted without her an emerald engagement ring while in Malibu with The Bear star, Jeremy Allen White. It was revealed in March 2024 that Martin had proposed to Johnson years earlier but neither was in a rush to get married.
Whispers that their relationship was on the rocks began back in May after a fan alleged on Twitter that Martin had confirmed that he was single. You can read the post here.
Multiple insiders came forward to corroborate this, claiming that Martin and Johnson had ended their engagement. The couple supposedly “tried desperately hard over the past few months to make their relationship work”.
“They’ll always have love for each other but they’ve both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term,” they added. Given Johnson’s statement, it’s clear the duo are keen to lay the rumours to bed after addressing the situation in as much detail as they’re willing to.
Johnson will soon front Celine Song’s sophomore directorial offering also starring Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. The upcoming romantic comedy, titled Materialists, is set to follow Johnson as a New York City matchmaker, her ex-boyfriend and a wealthy businessman.
