Winds in the West End, something’s brewing here—it’s Daisy Edgar-Jones in custom Vivienne Westwood at the Twisters premiere. On July 8, the British actress arrived on the red carpet to promote the upcoming sequel to the 1996 cult-classic natural disaster movie. The European premiere, hosted at London’s Leicester Square, marked the first stop of the whirlwind press tour.
But fresh from the shoulders of our imminent Gladiator, Paul Mescal, in the muddy grounds of Glastonbury and back to her classic balayage brunette tresses, Edgar-Jones is proof that method dressing is not for the faint of heart.
Sartorially referencing your character or film through your ensembles has usurped just wearing beautiful gowns on the red carpet. This headline-making gesture has become the mode du jour after co-signs from Zendaya during the Dune and Challengers promotional run and Margot Robbie with Barbie, who has just announced her pregnancy.
So, like Hunter Schafer in custom Prada at the 2024 Golden Globes, Edgar-Jones’ dress required its own wind machine to evoke the full tempest fantasy of the draped chiffon. The floor-length gown doesn’t initially convey the dirt backyard of the midwest’s tornado alley, yet when posing in front of the torn-down hay bails and rested debris of the step-and-repeat, the 26-year-old transforms into the twister itself, A force of nature, indeed.
The gown featured a sepia brown corseted bodice and a wrapped skirt that moulded to Edgar-Jones’ figure like a Hellenistic sculpture. A daring split hem cascaded into excess fabric and a billowing shoulder accent flowed in the wind to creat a dramatic flair. She was joined by her co-stars, Glen Powell, who wore a very Ryan Gosling-approved Gucci suit with contrasting pinstripe detailing, and Broadway alumni, Anthony Ramos.
Edgar-Jones helms the production as precocious storm chaser Kate Cooper. After a devastating encounter, Cooper resolves to follow the temperamental weather patterns from the safety of her lab. With the convergence of a once-in-a-generation tornado outbreak and coaxing from adrenaline junkie Tyler Owens (Powell), Cooper ventures out into central Oklahoma for the ride of her life.
