At the 2021 Grammy Awards Dua Lipa paid homage to Cher in a glittering Versace butterfly gown. It was reminiscent to an appearance from the pop icon at the same event in 1974 with the same shimmering pink eyeshadow and long jet black locks. You can’t blame fans for comparing the two stars but for one unfortunate Twitter user this week, their tweet went viral for all the wrong reasons.

In a since-deleted tweet one fan wrote that Lipa was the “Cher of our generation” with another re-tweeting the label writing, “So much truth in one tweet”. They had tagged both women but clearly didn’t expect a response. It seems the 76-year-old wasn’t exactly pleased with being compared to the 27-year-old and sarcastically responded: “How many yrs are in a generation 🤔”.

Awkward.

Of course it caused a lengthy debate in the comment section. One passionate user wrote, “Cher is the Cher of every goddamn generation she touches”. Another added, “People are not really understanding the cultural impact Cher had. Anyone can dress like Cher today, but it’s not the same thing as being the first one to break that ground. That was Cher.”

It’s true, no one can understate the true influence of Cher in the ’70s and ’80s – after all she has been dubbed the goddess of pop. Remember that Bob Mackie naked dress? Or her namesake television show on CBS, Cher? Across her career the “Believe” signer has earned an Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and four Golden Globes for work in music and cinema.

The same could be said for Lipa’s influence on Generation Z of course with her own unique personal style, an upcoming film appearance and award-winning albums. The next 50 years for the artist are certainly going to be exciting.
