Although Billie Eilish walked the pink carpet at Barbie’s world premiere as a life-sized Y2K Bratz doll, the pop supernova has today revealed she’ll transform into a full Barbie fantasy in the upcoming music video for her song “What Was I Made For?”

The forthcoming single, written as original music for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film, has garnered a lot of anticipation around it, with the only snippet of the song being an ethereal piano melody and Eilish’s signature haunting vocals.

Now, the 21-year-old has shared a still of herself from the music video, with Eilish eschewing her grungy jet-black tresses for a Barbie signature Malibu blonde ‘do.

As Ryan Gosling’s 80s-inspired Ken power ballad noted, perhaps the song and the accompanying video will embody “blonde fragility” given the lyrics’ nihilistic undertones.

In the image, Eilish is a consummate Barbie with a perfectly 1950s-flipped Barbie doll ponytail.

The hairstyle is reminiscent of the original 1959 black-and-white swimsuit Barbie doll, with Eilish emulating the look right down to the no-hair-out-of-place bumper bang.

Indeed, Eilish is channeling: This Barbie is having an existential crisis but with totally flawless hair.

This vintage silhouette is an aesthetic Eilish rarely dabbles in, rather gravitating towards an eccentric melange of hype beast-esque logomania pieces and ludicrously oversized shapes.

With Eilish dipping her foot into the old-Hollywood style she leaned into for the 2021 Met Gala, could this mark a new sartorial era for the songstress?

The more likely answer is that Eilish is embodying Margot Robbie’s “Solo In The Spotlight” Barbie-inspired look from the film’s world premiere. With Robbie the unrivalled real-life doll, Eilish is certainly contending with the Australian actress for best ponytail flip.

As both Barbies are proving, a little hot-pink hairspray goes a long way when achieving this Stepford Wives-like hairstyle.

Given that the film has even prompted Eilish to embrace the merits of Barbiecore, perhaps the Barbie ponytail will reclaim its spot as the hairstyle du jour. After all, this film will undoubtedly convince us of the benefits of a plastic fantastic life.
