There is a Nike advertisement from the 1980s of a woman dancing in hot pink tights, leg warmers and a lycra leotard. It read: “The Air Elite is anatomically correct for a woman’s foot, so it supports your every move.” Long before the rise of Serena Williams and Simone Biles, the sporting giant had women in mind. In 2022, Nike has built a hallmark product offering across apparel, accessories and footwear to ensure women have a choice, not options.

This year saw the brand overhaul its collection of sports bras to offer three new styles: the Alate, the Indy, and the beloved Swoosh silhouettes. The Nike Alate is designed for versatility and a second-skin feel that moulds to your breasts using a buttery material. It offers lighter support which can be worn all day. The Indy offers the same light support with a racer back and removable cups for activities such as yoga or walking (yes, brunch also counts). The iconic Swoosh style has also seen a makeover with super strong velcro closures but still provides the same compressive feel – seriously there is nothing moving here.

To ensure the best fit for every shape and size, Nike has adopted the use of data and visualisation in the design process. The brand has studied thousands of 3D body scans of women to analyse breast shape variation to create visual body maps that inform the technical and material design of
the brand’s bra sizes. Additionally – because they’re made to be active in – each style has been tested on the “Bra Bot”, simulating multi-directional breast movement and bounce from female athletes.

For the best fit Nike have experts to fit you properly in store. Remember that amazing feeling when you clip your uncomfortable bra off at the end of the day? Neither.
