From the Rocco corridors of The Row’s Pre-Fall 24 runway setting on the Rue des Capucines comes the latest covetable, albeit controversial, shoe trend: jelly sandals.

The Olsen Twins’ “no phone” policy might’ve come into effect during the Resort ‘25 season, but it’s a decision that feels especially inspired considering the social media virality of the laced gelatinous Mara slip-on flat, which debuted in the previous season.

Styled with a soft yarn ornamental towel scarf and their signature sleek tailoring, the vintage style’s resurgence was a marker of the tranquil energy Ashley and Mary-Kate envisioned for summer: sliding on the rubber sole following a dip in the Mediterranean to traverse the rocky beaches.

Yet when the vinyl jelly sandal immediately sold out, purchasing the 80s and 90s youthful staple in a contemporary shape wasn’t just an act of stocking up on sartorial Euro Summer utilities or even healing our inner child. It was a signal that new iterations of flats would continue to be the mode du jour—this one just happened to resemble saccharine licorice.

Yes, Miu Miu might’ve had the satin ballet slips that started it all, Alaïa with its netted flats, Sandy Liang and her mesh Mary Janes and even Tory Burch’s studded slide-ons, but The Row has something more powerful: nostalgia.

Unlike the fisherman variant we’d drip soft serve ice cream on during a hot summer day in our childhood, the most lust-worthy jelly sandals have a caged silhouette. Now, they’ve also received endorsement from celebrity acolytes. (But if you’re Kristen Dunst, who wore jelly heels to the 1995 MTV Movie Awards, you’d fit into both factions).

While combating a heat wave in Manhattan, Jennifer Lawrence stepped out on back-to-back occasions wearing the candy apple red colourway. (Should The Row ever restock the style, there’s a glitter pen lilac pink, Balariac blue and clear PVC colour available, too).

The actress paired the shoes with an oversized St. Agni tote and red accents in keeping with her newfound “quiet luxury” aesthetic, but this isn’t the first time she’s shown allegiance to the jelly sandal.

If you recall, one of Lawrence’s most iconic pre-makeover ensembles was the strappy pink jellies and floral overalls she wore while pregnant with her son, Cy Maroney. Of course, given the reawakening of the humble bubble skirt and award-winning fashion designer Christopher Esber giving the jelly flip-flop his signature touch, it’s possible this summer will be totally retro.
