Not since Succession’s Tom Wamsbagns discredited a luxury carry-all as “ludicrously capacious” have we seen the zeitgeist be so capricious in its changing factions.

Long gone are the days of Jacquemus Le Chiquito wielding models, with our allegiance to accessories falling on the macro scale. Desirability is no longer derived from stealth purses fit for only a single Apple AirPod, but rather a bulging, bursting-at-the-seams bag where your social currency is epitomised by what treasures peak up from the brim.

Perhaps the latest Zadie Smith or Otessa Mosfegh novel? (Who cares if you actually read it though, its possession is a sign of an intellectual!) Or, a suite of half-used Rouge Hermès shiny lipsticks scattered at the bottom of your bag with abandon. Possibly, even your lunch pail and flats for the subway.

Irrespective of the contents, the mode du jour is one of maximalism, where the-bigger-the-better bags are embraced without care for your clavicle.

In Paris, Miu Miu sent bags down the runway with block-heeled shoes and carabiner cables messily slung over the edge.

Elsewhere in the French capital, Balenciaga adorned their distressed bags in gadgets and gizmos to serve as an explosion of accessories for your, well, accessory.

In Milan, Bottega Veneta presented extra large variations of their Sardine bags with newspapers sitting erect out of the top of the bag.

Of course, we would be remiss to mention the frazzled, oversized accessory aesthetic stemmed from the late British-French fashion maven, Jane Birkin.

The recently deceased style savant pioneered the Birkin-fictation—that is, to treat without reverence and optimise functionality—of luxury bags, with her contemporary protégé, Mary-Kate Olsen, emblematic of the weathered bags covetability.

With these well-adorned bags becoming the new form of luxury, wearing your personality on your sleeve is not only a symbol of luxury, but a chic way of sartorially expanding your style persona.
