My first brush with Scanlan Theodore’s famed crepe knit fabric began in Manhattan many moons ago; thick, zipper-less, the type of textile which moulded into shape no matter its wearer’s curve. There was the cobalt blue crepe knit dress which Laura Dern commented on at the world premiere of Great Gerwig’s Little Women. The black crepe knit blazer and skirt combo worn to the Tory Burch show in Brooklyn during Fashion Week. The red crepe knit skirt with a sparkly thread worn to interview Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson uptown. Indeed, a crepe knit-something has seemingly accompanied so many of my career hallmarks.

The real heralding of the fabric, however, came when Meghan Markle wore a midnight blue iteration for a royal engagement in London. Zipper-less and with a cap sleeve and neck tie, so many of our readers wanted to know where this dress was from.

This pre-fall 2024 season, the crepe knit evolves.

Crepe knit square-necked camisoles are worn over a collared shirt and styled with a matching peplum skirt. There’s a crepe knit turban twist dress. A crepe knit cropped button jacket. The list goes on. Elsewhere, there’s long Balenciaga-inspired gloves, and the brand’s best-selling mohair cardigans are overlooked for the new season cashmere two-toned button ups. Velvet is smattered throughout, the standout a blush pink shoulder pad sweater.  

I returned to the States last month, this time to Aspen, and I should note I deviated from my crepe knit love affair. The brand’s cashmere collection this season is superb; light-weight, luxurious, beautifully soft against the skin. But, to be an instant Aspenite, you need a faux fur cape, a cowboy hat from Kemo Sabe and healthy dose of confidence.
