Kendall Jenner may have been the most private of the Kardashian-Jenner family (and in many ways, aside from Kylie Jenner, still is) – but over the years we’ve seen the model find her feet in the fashion world, to the point where while once she followed the trends, now she’s starting them.
Her rise from fresh face on the fashion runways to modern-day supermodel was fast, and her style evolution followed suit. Now, Jenner has her statement off-duty fashion staples, as well as a penchant for bold red carpet style that ranges from dramatic couture to naked dresses.
Here, we take a look back at Kendall Jenner’s style from her teenage years to present-day.
2013
Given Kylie and Kendall Jenner have been in the spotlight (and on red carpets) since they were children, we’ve naturally got a lengthy style evolution to look at. Here, the Jenner sisters attend a collection preview of their label, Kendall And Kylie, and while these looks may be dated now, we really did adore a black leather/tank top fit in 2013, so both the girls were right on the sartorial money.
For the American Music Awards, the sisters attended in tandem again – they often went to events together until just a few years ago. Here, Kendall Jenner embraced the trend of ‘oversized jewels, sculptured mini dress’ that we all adored (except we wore ours to club Wednesdays, not celebrity red carpets).
2014
Kendall Jenner has been in attendance at The Met Gala since she was 19 years old – that’s pretty impressive. For her first, ‘Charles James: Beyond Fashion’, the model kept things simple in the ultimate high/low combination – a custom Topshop dress teamed with Chopard diamonds.
We’re sensing a theme here – the Jenner sisters once again graced a red carpet, this time the Billboard Music Awards, in complementary white-and-black outfits, this time with Kendall Jenner wearing black leather and a cut-out tank, Kylie Jenner in a white cocktail dress (and that infamous blue dip-dye we all replicated).
2015
2015 was the year Kylie Jenner took over as the most popular Kardashian sister, launching her makeup line and spearheading the unicorn hair trend. But Kendall Jenner’s style endures. Her cool-girl aesthetic here – teaming long cut-offs with a bikini and western vest – wouldn’t look out-of-place at Coachella today, just teamed with cowboy boots instead.
Kendall Jenner at the 2015 Met Gala might be her fashion turning point. Wearing a jewelled, chainmail Calvin Klein dress that tied at the sides, Jenner looked every part the high-fashion model – which is exactly what she was becoming at the time.
Her Victoria’s Secret modelling years saw Kendall Jenner embracing her sexy side, seen here at a fashion show after party in New York wearing Versace with Jimmy Choo heels.
2016
By 2016 we were seeing Kendall Jenner in street style round-ups, with the model jet setting across the globe as part of her modelling career. From the outset, Jenner loved low-key, boyish fashion when off duty – like this grey trouser suit with white sneakers.
One of Kendall Jenner’s best fashion looks of all time, this Atelier Versace piece had the fashion set in raptures when Jenner stepped onto the 2016 Met Gala red carpet in it. Worn for ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology’, Jenner told E! she had a major hand in what she wore for the night. “[Donatella Versace] sent me sketches. I picked my favourites. I couldn’t pick between two, so I said, ‘You pick!'”
While Kendall Jenner was still snapped regularly with little sister Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid became a mainstay by her side from 2016. Here, the models were photographed in West Hollywood, Jenner wearing an Andrew Gn matador-style jacket and (a 2016 staple) skinny-leg denim.
2017
As the Jenner sisters grew up in the spotlight, so too did their style – by 2017, both sisters were known for impeccable event fashion and knowing how to work the camera. For the Golden Globe Awards After Party, Kendall wore a burnt orange silk strapless gown, while Kylie brought glitz in a form-fitting sequinned dress.
For The Met Gala in 2017, Kendall Jenner broke the internet in a naked dress (the first of many!). With a slashed bodice and a thigh-high split, this was the model’s most revealing gown yet. A La Perla creation, it marked a turning point in Jenner’s aesthetic – no longer the baby of the Kardashian family, she was a full-fledged supermodel.
2018
For the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party, Jenner wore a Redemption mini dress that featured billowing structured sleeves.
Now entering events in full fashion confidence and setting trends instead of following, Jenner wore an incredible cream suit with plunging neckline that tied at the waist, teamed with burnt orange mules.
Kendall Jenner’s most naked dress yet was this Alexandre Vauthier mini, which draped across her body like water. The sheer, jewelled material revealed, well, everything, and made a gendered political statement – this was also the year when women pushed against sexist social media standards around nudity, and the #FreeTheNipple campaign was in full swing.
2019
The years of 2018 and 2019 were all about shock-factor fashion for Kendall Jenner – at the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party, she wore Rami Kadi couture, which featured a jewelled bodice and two astronomically high thigh splits. Again, the model broke the internet and redefined her public perception.
Ever the chameleon, in Cannes Jenner went for the complete opposite of revealing in this frothy Giambattista Valli gown, which here was worn as a mini, but also featured a detatchable train of tulle.
For the 2019 Met Gala, Kendall Jenner tag-teamed with little sister Kylie in feathered, bejewelled Versace – hers burnt orange, Kylie’s lavender purple. She also posed with good friend Hailey Bieber, who stole the show in Alexander Wang (and an exposed thong).
Still, while her red carpet looks were regularly daring, Jenner’s off-duty style was more low key than ever. Here, she was snapped by paparazzi in LA wearing Birkenstocks, cut off denim and a white tank with an open shirt. So basically what we wear every weekend.
2020
Even with her off-duty style, Kendall Jenner was setting trends. In a cropped cardigan, dad sneakers and mid-waist denim, Jenner embraced the 90s – right now to her claw clip hairstyle.
Doing Barbiecore before Barbiecore, Jenner wore this hot pink two-piece with the Amina Muaddi crystal heels we all coveted out in NYC. With the high pigtails and glossy lips, she’d easily fit in on Greta Gerwig’s film set.
Another outing, another trend-setting fit. This time, Jenner wore print pants, the Prada combat boots we all wanted, and kicked off the 90s leather long-line jacket trend.
We simply love Kendall Jenner in a vintage moment, like this Jean Paul Gaultier butterfly set at an event during London Fashion Week.
For the Brit Awards afterparty in 2020, Jenner wore a Saks Potts set (not a jumpsuit!) in glittering, fluoro green. She reunited with ex Harry Styles at the event for the first time in ages, too.
2021
Her favourite 2013 black leather look, but make it 2021. For a night out in LA, Jenner teamed straight leg leather pants with an orange bandeau top and 2021’s best accessory – a face mask.
Another day, another 90s off-duty look for Kendall Jenner. Entering the waistcoat trend way before the rest of us, Jenner wore this look out in LA, showing again the myriad of styles the model enjoys.
Arriving at the Jacquemus show before walking the runway, Jenner went for a plunging crop and cut-out pencil skirt.
The 2021 Met Gala saw Kendall Jenner draped in crystals for the theme ‘In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion’. The model wore Givenchy, a gown that was described at the time as the ultimate naked dress.
2022
For the first Met Gala where all the Kardashian-Jenner sisters were present, Kendall Jenner wore a voluminous Prada gown (well, set really) and debuting bleached eyebrows. Her gown complemented sister Kylie Jenner’s all-white ensemble, Off-White Virgil Abloh creation.
In a rare outing with ex Devin Booker, Jenner walked the streets of Portofino in a floral 90s set, then later in this Dolce & Gabbana corset and skirt. The outing came just before reports of a break up.
Attending the US Open in September, Jenner looked as low-key elegant as you can get in a Bottega Veneta silk dress with the label’s Sardine bag and The Row sandals. She also proved her relationship with Booker was still on, bringing the NBA star along to matches.
Hitting the red carpet at the LACMA Art + Film Gala at the end of 2022, Jenner chose her old stylist Marni Senofonte, who selected emerging designer Burc Akyol for the model, telling Instagram they “immediately saw Kendall in it” when they first spotted the creation on the runway.
2023
Out in Los Angeles, Jenner once again leant on her old staples – straight leg classic denim by Khaite, a white tee and a statement piece – this time a vintage Bates Rave motorcross jacket, similar to ones worn in the 90s by top supermodels (who naturally set a trend). Watch this space – if Kendall Jenner is bringing in motorcross style, you know it’ll be a matter of time before all the vintage pieces are snapped up.
Attending the celebrity-studded Atlantis The Royal hotel launch in Dubai, Jenner wore the Schiaparelli purse dress for red carpet arrivals.
Always the fashion star at the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party, Jenner wore vintage Jean Paul Gaultier again, this time a cascading, fish-scale design that hugged her curves and turned her into an Old Hollywood starlet.
