Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that she and her husband, Will Smith, have been living “completely separate lives” since 2016. The actress made the admission in an interview from Baltimore with anchor Hoda Kotb.
The couple decided to part ways seven years ago, but have still remained “together,” Pinkett Smith explained. The seemingly dynamic duo has been trying to figure out how to make it work while still raising kids together, but not being together romantically.
Pinkett Smith said that she and Smith decided to separate after she had a relationship with another man, August Alsina, in 2016. Alsina publicly confirmed the relationship in June 2020, but the Smiths denied it at the time.
“I was in a lot of pain and I was very broken,” Pinkett Smith said. “I just wanted to feel good. It had been so long since I felt good. And it was really a joy to just help heal somebody.”
However, Pinkett Smith said that she eventually realized that she was not being honest with herself or with Smith about the relationship. She said that she and Smith decided to go to counseling together, and they eventually reconciled.
“We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together,” she shared with People in an article published on October 11. “We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”
