Snap, snap. After an ultra-successful first season, Netflix has renewed Wednesday for a second season. Since its November 23 release, the Netflix original series’ debut season set viewing records for the streamer, with over 341 million hours viewed for an English language series in its first week. It’s also become the second biggest English language season of television on Netflix.

The official Twitter account of the series announced the news with a video and caption promising that, “More torture is coming. Lucky you.”

Actress Jenna Ortega (who received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal) stars as the eponymous Wednesday Addams in the horror comedy by Tim Burton, alongside her on-screen parents, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the iconic gothic matriarch Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán as her doting and devoted husband, Gomez. Issac Ordonez stars as their son, Pugsley. Rounding out the cast is Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Gwendoline Christie as Larissa Weems, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, George Burcea as the eerie servant Lurch, Victor Dorobantu as the hand Thing, and more.

We even get a nostalgic treat with appearances from Yellowjackets’ Christina Ricci (as Marilyn Thornhill) who played Wednesday Addams in the 1990 film.

Co-showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar also served as writers and executive producers on the MGM-backed show while Burton executive produced and directed four out of the total eight episodes.

“We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky, spooky world of Nevermore,” Gough and Millar exclusively told Netflix’s outlet Tudum. “We just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”

The Addams Family has had a myriad of renditions over the years. Created by cartoonist Charles Addams, it first appeared as a comic strip in 1938, originally published in The New Yorker. Tales of the dysfunctional family would eventually become a 1960s television series, a Tony Award-winning musical and a successful ’90s film franchise.

The first season of the smash hit followed the titular cynical Wednesday (Ortega) while navigating life as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday must contend with a supernatural killing spree that has invaded the local town and attempt to gain control over her psychic powers, all while solving a 25-year-old mystery that once entangled her parents.

Wednesday became a fan-favorite overnight, saturating Instagram and TikTok feeds with Wednesday-inspired fashion and beauty trends, as well as viewers replicating Ortega’s iconic dance. Even Lady Gaga gave it a whirl, as well as figure skater Kamila Valieva at the 2023 Russian Figure Skating Championships last week.

“It’s been incredible to create a show that’s connected with people across the world,” the co-show runners added. “We’re thrilled to continue Wednesday’s torturous journey into season 2.”
