Welcome back to the Met Gala, Troye Sivan. The last time we saw the singer on the famed steps was in 2018 when the artist wore a red Valentino suit for ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination’. Surely, we thought it’d be impossible to top such a magnificent ensemble. For 2021 however, Sivan turned heads in a floor-grazing slip dress, platform boots and a diamond Cartier necklace.

Fittingly and in a bid to turn the lights back on in the US, this year’s exhibition was in honor of homegrown designers. For Sivan who hails from Australia, he took inspiration from New York’s pared down simplicity.

“When I think of America, especially New York, I think of chic, I think of black and white, I think of Robert Mapplethorpe and I think of leather,” Sivan told Vogue’s reporter for the evening Keke Palmer. “Leather is so American.”

For those unacquainted, Mapplethorpe was a queer American photographer best known for his black-and-white celebrity portraits. The artist didn’t wear an American designer however, and instead opted for a piece from French designer, Joseph Altuzarra.

Sivan wasn’t the only celebrity to honor a queer creative on the red carpet this evening. Schitt’s Creek star and producer Daniel Levy appeared at the Met Gala wearing Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe, inspired by David Wojnarovicz.

The “My! My! My!” pop star made his red carpet return just overnight when he walked the VMAs red carpet in a cropped Fendi suit. Following the recent release of his first solo single of 2021, “Angel Baby”, we expect to see a lot more of Sivan (and in amazing style) in the months to come.

Stay tuned.
