Whitney Houston was undoubtedly one of the most famous singers from the ’80s and ’90s with hit tracks including “Higher Love” and “How Will I Know.” Music that is still famous today. The star tragically passed away at age 49 and marking one decade since her death will see Houston immortalized through cinema.

Directed by Kasi Lemmons, written by Academy Award nominee Anthony McCarten and produced by legendary music executive Clive Davis arrives the first official trailer to I Wanna Dance with Somebody. A film that according to Sony Pictures, “is a no-holds-barred portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman” and include highlights from her career including her 1991 Super Bowl performance.

“From New Jersey choir girl to one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time, audiences are taken on an inspirational, poignant—and so emotional—journey through Houston’s trailblazing life and career, with show-stopping performances and a soundtrack of the icon’s most beloved hits as you’ve never heard them before,” the synopsis reads. “Don’t you wanna dance?”

The trailer depicts the incredible transformation of the BAFTA Award winning actress, Naomi Ackie. She stars alongside the likes of Stanley Tucci, Ashton Sanders, Tamara Tunie, Nafessa Williams and Clarke Peters.

Ackie spoke on the pressures of playing the singer in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in May. “I’m going to try my best because that woman – it sends shivers down my spine how much she means to me, the world, Black women, African American women,” Ackie said at the time. “I’m going to throw my everything into making sure she is represented properly.”

“I just want to tell her story. And I think when I’m able to simplify it down to that, I’ll be able to handle the pressure,” she added.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody will will hit theaters on Dec. 21. Watch the trailer below.
