We all have that moment when you receive an invitation that ambiguously reads, “cocktail attire required.” While I have a general idea of what this means (a black minidress?), shopping for it can be tough. Is it taboo to wear gowns? Are pants appropriate? How fancy do I need to be? Better yet, how casual?
The idea of “cocktail dresses” first originated in a 1927 issue of Vogue and the style was defined as “a short dress that is suitable for formal occasions,” i.e. something sophisticated that you can also let loose in. The idea has evolved over time and now cocktail attire options are more vast, with jumpsuits and blazers also qualifying for the occasion. It is possible, to be too formal, so let’s leave the gowns at home. I like to spice up simpler outfits with statement accessories like bold jewelry or a sparkly clutch. When it comes to shoes, you can wear heels from kitten to strappy sandals but a chic flat will also work. Still feeling confused? I’ve divided cocktail dresses into three categories: LBDs, glitz and brightly-colored, so you can find the perfect option for your next soirée.
LBD
When in doubt opt for an LBD. The tried and true classic will never fail.
A Bit of Glitz
A few options for my glamour girls! It’s a party after all, so have fun with your look!
Bold and Bright
A bold dress in a bright color is an amazing option for spring and summer events.
