Run the World is Sex and the City meets Living Single — and we’re willing to bet it will be your new favorite show. The eight-episode, half-hour series begins airing on Starz May 16. In a press release for the series, it’s described as “the story of a group of Black women: vibrant, fiercely loyal best friends. At its core, it’s an unapologetically female show about enviable friendship and not only surviving but thriving together.” In the trailer we see Amber Stevens West as Whitney Green, Andrea Bordeaux as Ella McFair, Bresha Webb as Renee Ross, and Corbin Reid as Sondi Hill, looking fabulous and living life as best friends in Harlem.
The series is created by Leigh Davenport, who executive produces along with showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser, who created Living Single. Run the World builds upon Starz’ #TakeTheLead initiative, which centers on the network’s commitment to creating programing that features women and underrepresented audiences. Patricia Field is helping with costuming, so we do know the clothing will be good.
“Run the World is exactly the kind of bold, authentic, inclusive storytelling that Starz is committed to delivering to our global audience,” Jeffrey Hirsch, President and CEO of Starz told Deadline. “We feel as though we have captured lightning in a bottle with the energy and chemistry of this cast and their portrayal of these distinct characters in this modern-day view of four female friends in New York City and we look forward to bringing the series to the platform.”
“Run the World is a love letter to Black women and a love letter to Harlem, that I hope inspires young, ambitious Black women to feel powerful, desirable and free,” said Davenport. “I created this series to celebrate the amazing women in my life and to illuminate the special bonds we built living in Harlem, while pursuing our post-collegiate dreams.”
